With award season now well underway, the breathtaking beauty looks just keep getting better at each star-studded ceremony. From Florence Pugh's structural up-do to Jodie Turner-Smith's bejewelled face, this weekend's 2023 BAFTA Film Awards was no exception, with one actress in particular paving the way for this year's power lip.
Ana de Armas graced the red carpet, hosted at The Royal Festival Hall in London, sporting a striking pinky-red shade with an alluring sparkly cat eye, a look that was beyond elegant. Make-up artist Mary Wiles spoke to Bazaar exclusively to deconstruct the inspiration behind the nominee's captivating beauty and give us an insight into its creation.
"It's all about making sure that your base is right," Wiles explained, using a combination of Estée Lauder's Advanced Night Repair Serum and Revitalizing Supreme+ Soft Creme to hydrate de Armas' base pre-make-up. "I start with the eyes, letting the product penetrate into the for skin as long as possible. That way, if anything that drops onto the skin, I can clean it off and still have a nice clean base."
"I curled Ana's lashes first of all and then applied the Double Wear 24HR Waterproof Gel Eye Pencil in Onyx, which is really good because it's an intense black, through the lash line and coming out for a tiny cat eye." Wiles then followed with the same formula in shade Espresso, to give the liner a structured softness. "That gives you that definition without any heaviness around the eye."
The subtle mirrorball shine on the actress' eyes can be credited to Estée Lauder's Pure Color Envy Luxe Eyeshadow Quad in Grey Haze, which Wiles used to create a soft veil of light silver shimmer seen under the bright BAFTAs lights. "I patted it onto the eyelids, mainly concentrating on the centre of the eyelid, which just brings a little bit of freshness and highlight to the eye."
For the bright and angelic-feeling blush, the make-up artist opted for a spring-ready nude-meets-coral flush across the apples of her cheeks, veering away from a heavily contoured look.
The unrivalled star of de Armas' exquisite make-up was, of course, said lip shade; striking, clean and classic. To create the bold colour, Wiles previewed two yet-to-launch shades, pairing Estée Lauder's Double Wear 24HR Stay-in-Place Lip Liner in shade Rebellious Rose, a near burgundy tone, with the Pure Color Lipstick in Don't Stop, for a statement pink-red hue and matte finish.
The make-up was specifically curated to balance de Armas' hyper-feminine Louis Vuitton gown, lending the overall look a strong and polished flare which she favoured over the more subdued, barely-there alternative.
"We wanted to go for a strong lip to slightly offset the softness of the dress. It's really beautiful thin satin fabric, which is soft and very pretty, but we wanted to keep her look striking. A red lip is always going to be striking and it suits Ana so much."
Wiles secured the look with a light dusting of powder across her T-zone exclusively, allowing a healthy dew to remain, with a misting of high performance setting spray.
The feminine beauty was finished with a softened glamour wave; a nod to the trailing mermaid structure of her dress, courtesy of celebrity hairstylist Halley Brisker, who was also responsible for Lily James' sophisticated up-do on the night.
The Cuban-Spanish actress was nominated for the Best Actress in a Leading Role award for her portrayal of Marilyn Monroe in Blonde, which was eventually awarded to Cate Blanchett for her performance in Tár.
