Netflix has unleashed the second season of the award-winning The Crown, starring Claire Foy and Matt Smith. The global smash hit reportedly cost over $100 million but, if you ask us, it's worth every penny.

Looking ahead, we're already excited for The Crown season three, set to feature Olivia Colman in the title role.

Series writer Peter Morgan is planning to tell the Queen's story over six seasons in total, and here's everything we know so far about the next chapter.

Given that filming has not even begun, The Crown season 3 is unlikely to air till very late 2018.

On the evidence of previous years (November 2016 and Dec 2017 respectively), we can safely assume the air date won't be before the end of 2018.

The Crown season 3 trailer: When can we expect to see it?

The first trailer for season two (below) didn't surface until August this year, so don't hold your breath just yet.

We'll probably have to wait until the autumn of 2018 before we catch of our first glimpse of season three.

Unlikely, given that the series is likely to focus on events in the '70s, but not entirely out of the question.

We're pretty sure, however, that Diana Spencer will become a main feature of later seasons as the show approaches the '80s and '90s.

Sadly not. After two seasons, the actress is moving on but she has lots of praise for her successor Olivia Colman.

Foy said: "I just love her, I admire her so much and the idea that we sort of will be doing the same job but not actually working together is just enough, I'm honoured by that."

On whether she had any advice for Colman, she added: "The only thing I would say is take vitamins and get lots of sleep."

The Crown season 3 cast: Who's been recast?

Everyone, we would think.

So far, we've got word on who'll be playing Queen Elizabeth II: TV royalty Olivia Colman.

Another star of the series, John Lithgow (who plays Winston Churchill) says of the Broadchurch star: "She's an amazing, miraculous actor. Somebody transcendent had to replace Claire and they found her."

Just as impressive, none another than Helena Bonham Carter is reportedly being lined up to replace Vanessa Kirby as Princess Margaret.

Though the casting's not been officially announced, Kirby all but confirmed it herself by posting a picture of the two together on Instagram, with the caption "Honoured".

As for Prince Philip (played by Doctor Who's Matt Smith in the first two seasons), rumour has it that Paul Bettany is in talks.

The Queen's first Prime Minister died in 1965, so Churchill is unlikely to return, though he will probably get a mention.

Likewise, Dexter's Michael C Hall, who plays US President John F Kennedy in season two, won't be expected to return – JFK was assassinated in 1963.

One character we do know who is making an appearance is Camilla Parker Bowles, as revealed earlier this year by The Crown producer, Suzanne Mackie. During a Q&A at the BFI & Radio Times Festival in London she said: "Peter is already talking about the most wonderful things. We start meeting Camilla Parker Bowles in season three."

Mackie added: "We have to be honest, season three and four are being mapped out and the closer the history comes – I now can say, 'God, I know exactly what I was feeling when that happened, I remember that and I remember this.' That's so exciting!"

Other real-life characters who could appear include Margaret Thatcher and Donald Trump!

We don't know for sure, but Olivia Colman is currently shooting movie thriller Them That Follow in the States and so should be free from January 2018.

This would be the earliest principal photography could begin on the show. Previously, filming on a season takes just over five months.
