A murder investigation has been launched after the death of a 24-year-old at a block of student flats in Newcastle.

Officers were called to the Mansion Tyne accommodation, on Howard Street, at around 4.30pm on Tuesday after receiving a report of concern for the welfare of a man.

Emergency services rushed to the scene, near the Quayside, but the man was sadly confirmed dead soon after.

A 21-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and remains in police custody.

Forensic officers were seen working at the block of flats on Thursday afternoon, while officers continue to conduct inquiries into the incident. A police cordon erected within the grounds of the block of flats remains the only sign of police activity.

Students spoken to at the scene on Thursday said they hadn’t been told much about the incident and had resumed their everyday activities.

A spokeswoman for Northumbria Police added: “It is believed the two men were known to each other and there is no risk to the wider public, but officers will remain in the area.

“The man’s next of kin have been informed and are currently being supported by specialist officers.”

"As this is an ongoing police investigation we are unable to comment further."
