Tomb Raider 2 fans have been dealt a blow when it comes to the long-anticipated sequel. It was making slow progress towards development, only to be suddenly cancelled in July 2022.

MGM hadn't green-lit the film, but they had until May 2022 to do something with the property before losing the rights. Without a confirmed sequel, the rights were lost — and along with them, any hopes for a direct sequel from MGM.

Given that little fact, it's highly unlikely we'll ever see a potential Tomb Raider 2. Yet, as the old adage goes, never say never.

With that in mind, here's what might happen with a potential Tomb Raider 2, if it's even going to happen in a similar way to the original plan.

Tomb Raider 2 potential release date: Has Tomb Raider 2 been cancelled?

We were always a bit worried when the sequel was delayed indefinitely in October 2020, but when Misha Green took over as writer/director in January 2021, we thought things were back on track.

However, after Alicia Vikander gave a disappointing update in July 2022, it was only shortly afterwards that it was reported the sequel had been scrapped entirely as a result of MGM losing the rights to the franchise, as we mentioned above.

According to TheWrap, Vikander is no longer attached to star as a result, and the new movie could be a complete reboot — if it ever happens.

Swedish video game company Embracer Group acquired Crystal Dynamics, Eidos-Montréal, Square Enix Montréal and a catalogue of their of IPs Tomb Raider, so who knows what that means for the sequel.

Watch this space and we'll update if we hear any more details about Lara Croft's next big-screen adventure.

Tomb Raider 2 cast: Who's coming back for Tomb Raider 2?

As of right now, absolutely nobody by all accounts.

We had thought Alicia Vikander would get another outing as Lara Croft, but that no longer seems to be the case.

It also means that the new movie (should it happen) won't bring back Kristin Scott Thomas as Ana Miller, Daniel Wu as Lu Ren, Dominic West as Lara's father Lord Richard Croft or anybody else who appeared in the 2018 movie.

Behind the scenes, Misha Green was set to write and direct the sequel. In May 2021, she confirmed she had finished the first draft for the sequel with the title Tomb Raider: Obsidian.

With the latest news, though, it seems Green is no longer attached either, but maybe she'll be brought in for the reboot.

Tomb Raider 2 plot: What will Tomb Raider 2 be about?

Everything that follows is based on the original idea that the sequel would follow up on the events of the first movie. However, if it's a total reboot for Lara's next movie, then you can ignore all of this.

Still, on the off chance it won't be a total reboot, here's what we expected from the sequel.

After Lara saved the world and stopped the deadly virus from escaping the tomb, she returned to London and accepted her place in her father's company.

However, she soon discovered that Trinity — the group that wanted to release the virus — was directly tied to Croft Holdings through Trinity's parent company Patna. Ana Miller, the business partner of Lara's father, is the head of Patna, and Lara figures out that Ana was working with Vogel and Trinity throughout their whole scheme.

So, the credits scene sees Lara buy the iconic twin guns from the video game, determined to carry on her father's work to stop Trinity.

Whether the sequel continues this thread of Lara's battle against Trinity remains to be seen, but there's also the opportunity for the sequel to just set up a new tomb and mission for Lara, completely detached from the original movie.

It could also take inspiration from the Rise of the Tomb Raider video game sequel, given that the first movie took heavy inspiration from Crystal Dynamics's 2013 reboot of the gaming franchise.

That game sees Lara travel to the lost city of Kitezh following her father's research into immortality and a magical MacGuffin that can grant it, the Divine Source. Misha Green has said she's a fan of the game, so read into that what you will.
