In 2020, we received the very excellent news that Reese Witherspoon is going to be adapting Delia Owens best-selling novel Where The Crawdads Sing into a movie.
The actress-turned-producer, who most recently worked on Big Little Lies and Little Fires Everywhere, chose the novel as her bookclub pick back in September 2018 and has since acquired the rights to develop the hugely successful murder mystery into a movie. Since the announcement everything we hear about the project just gets better and better, starting with the fact that Normal People's Daisy Edgar-Jones has been confirmed to star.

Released on 22nd March, the first trailer sees Daisy Edgar-Jones taking on the role of Kya, the outcasted young girl who had to fend for herself when her parents left. A love triangle begins to emerge when both Tate (Taylor John Smith) and Chase (Harris Dickinson) vie for her affection. But when one of them ends up dead, Kya faces a court case to try and prove her innocence.

Yep! In mid-March 2022, Vanity Fair revealed an exclusive first look at the cast in character, while the actors also shared some first looks of their own. Actor Taylor John Smith wrote, "Save the date for Kya and Tate ♥️ ‘Where the Crawdads Sing’ In theatres this summer July 22, 2022."

In July 2021, Daisy Edjar-Jones revealed filming on Where The Crawdads Sing had officially wrapped. Along with several behind the scenes pictures of the cast and crew filming the project, Daisy wrote, "Where the crawdudes be diddle daddling. What a wonderful few months it has been. I can’t wait for you to see Kya’s marsh in all its glory and thank you to the Crawdads team for working so hard to bring this beautiful story to life. That’s a heckin wrap. See you way out yonder. [sic]."
What is Where The Crawdads Sing about?
Released in 2018, the novel not only topped the New York Times bestsellers list but it also remained Amazon's most popular fiction book throughout 2019.
The novel tells the story of Kya, a young woman who is forced to raise herself on the North Carolina marshes when her family abandons her at the age of six. She grows up an outsider in her community, who ostracise and mistreat her, giving her names like 'Marsh Girl,' and 'swamp trash'.
As an adult Kya has grown up to be wise and self-sufficient and also becomes a successful, published author. But everything changes when she is accused of murdering her former boyfriend, a beloved member of the town she now lives in, and must piece together what actually happened.
According to The Hollywood Reporter the film will be "both a crime thriller and a coming-of-age tale that intertwines two timelines."
Who has been cast in Where The Crawdads Sing?
Normal People's Daisy Edgar-Jones will star as lead character Kya.
In June Reese shared several behind the scenes pictures from the set, including one showing Daisy as Kya.
Per Deadline, rising stars Taylor John Smith and Harris Dickinson have signed up to the adaptation as the two lead males. Taylor is best known for his roles in horror movie Shadow in the Clouds with Chlöe Grace Moretz and HBO's limited series Sharp Objects with Amy Adams, and will play Tate Walker.
Harris has appeared in Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and The King's Man, and will play Chase Andrews.
David Strathairn will play Tom Milton, Ahna O'Reilly will play Ma, while Sterling Macer Jr will play Jumpin and Michael Hyatt as Mabel.
We also know that Olivia Newman, who wrote and directed Netflix feature First Match, is directing. Elsewhere on the team, Oscar-nominated Beasts of the Southern Wild scribe Lucy Alibar wrote the script.
