EVs, hybrids dominate North American Car, Truck and Utility Vehicle of the Year top picks

What has five pickups, 10 cars and 10 SUVs with costs from $28,750 to more than $350,000?

The list of the Best of 2025 announced Friday by the North American Car, Truck and Utility Vehicle of the Year jury.

Twelve are electric vehicles while several offer hybrid models as the electrification of transportation continues.

The jury — which consists of 50 automotive journalists, including me — picked the top vehicles from 56 on sale in 2024. The list includes a handful that aren’t for sale yet, but have the potential to be good or important enough to invite to the NACTOY’s comparison event in October, when the jury will drive the vehicles again and narrow the list to three finalists for each of the three awards. Those nine finalists will be announced at the Los Angeles auto show Nov. 21.

The North American Car, Truck and Utility Vehicle of the Year will be announced in January 2025.

What’s hot, and why?

After further evaluation of finalists, jurors will vote for the winners, which will be announced at the Detroit Auto Show Jan. 10, 2025.

“We have a great variety of vehicles on the list,” NACTOY jury President Jeff Gilbert of WWJ (AM-950), said. “This list is an example of the great products the auto industry is producing, from cutting edge electric vehicles to traditional gasoline-powered cars and trucks, but also hybrids, which are a growing share of the market.”

The vehicles were to be revealed at Cars at the Station, which showcased a variety of vehicles at Michigan Central Station.
