The live-action Beauty and the Beast is headed our way this spring with an all-star cast and familiar songs to brighten our year.

Judging by the trailers it could be a much needed ray of sunshine after a rotten 2016, though it turns out production on the movie wasn't all plain sailing.

Talking to Total Film magazine, director Bill Condon admitted that one of his voice cast initially had a bit of a struggle with the accent.

Scottish actor Ewan McGregor, who voices enchanted French candelabra Lumiere, apparently had to re-record his vocals because his first attempt sounded Mexican.

Sacré bleu!

Of course, he nailed it in the end. After the first go was unintentionally hispanic, McGregor worked with a vocal coach then returned for a second shot where he managed to muster "a flawless, beautiful French accent."

In the official trailer, you can hear a bit of his musings as he asks Dan Stevens's Beast: "Look at her. What if she is the one? The one who'll break the spell."

The 'her' is of course Emma Watson, who plays Belle, in what she says is going to be a feminist take on the story of a young woman imprison by a man cursed to look like a monster, based on the Disney animation.

"The core DNA of Belle is a feminist," she told Total Film. "And that's Linda Woolverton, who was the first female writer who wrote for Disney. Belle was actually based on Katherine Hepburn at the time."

Rounding out the voice cast is Sir Ian McKellen - who worked with Condon on Mr Holmes - playing Cogsworth the clock, and Emma Thompson as musical teapot Mrs Potts.

Beauty and the Beast opens in cinemas on March 17. The latest issue of Total Film magazine is on sale now.
