Former Coronation Street star Oliver Mellor has said that he is "disgusted" after nude photographs of him were allegedly taken at the gym and leaked to a WhatsApp group.

The actor, who played Dr Matt Carter on the soap for a three year stint from August 2010, was apparently told about the photographs by his fiancee Rhian Sugden, who in turn had been told by a friend.

"I'm disgusted," Mellor told The Sun.

"It's a total invasion of privacy. Hopefully the police make an arrest."

He continued: "It's very unnerving to think I can't have a shower or get changed without some creep taking secret pics of me when I am naked.

"I reported the matter to the gym and police – so hopefully they can investigate and make an arrest."

The alleged images were taken at a Pure Gym in Manchester, and the newspaper reports that a suspect was later identfied when staff reviewed CCTV footage.

"Our membership rules forbid members from taking photographs/videos on Pure Gym premises or from posting remarks to the internet that may identify another member," said a gym spokesperson

"We take this issue very seriously and have given Mr Mellor our full support.

"We will fully co-operate with any police investigation and any member found to have taken photos of this nature will be banned from all of our gyms."

Mellor quit Coronation Street in 2013, explaining that his character didn't have enough going on for him to stay with the soap.

"There were quite long periods when I didn't appear at all, so I realised it was time to leave," he said at the time.

"They didn't try to make me stay – they admitted they didn't have any solid plans for the doctor and it would be more of the same.

"I thought, 'Fair enough, you've been great but it's time to go'. They just weren't progressing my character as much as I would like. As an actor you want some kind of consistency and to be busy."

He added that it was "a shame" that Dr Matt didn't get an exit storyline, but said that as he wasn't being killed off there was always a chance he could return.
