Former EastEnders star Aaron Sidwell has said that many fans were left disappointed by Steven Beale's untimely death last year.

Aaron's character Steven was killed off back in September, when he succumbed to injuries he'd received from his fatal fight with Max Branning.

Steven had a very eventful time on screen in the lead-up to his demise – lying about having a terminal brain tumour and plotting to kill his step-mum Jane.

However, Aaron has revealed that some fans felt disappointed by the final nature of Steven's exit, believing he had more to give.

"A lot of feedback I had from viewers was that they felt the character of Steven had been wasted," he said to Inside Soap.

"Personally, I didn't feel that way. For me, Steven was an impact character rather than a long-stay character – although it's always wonderful when people want more of your work."

Speaking of how he felt about leaving the show, Aaron said: "By the time Steven died, I was definitely ready to go.

"There was a lot of negativity around the show at the time, and my storylines did meander for me a bit in the middle.

"Once you know you're leaving, though, the story has drive and purpose, and the stuff I had at the end was really strong."

EastEnders continues on Thursday, January 18 at 7.30pm on BBC One.
