Ex-Richard Simmons 2012 Range Rover Is Today's Pick on Bring a Trailer
He made Sweatin' to the Oldies a fitness craze, but Richard Simmons motored around in cool, serene style in an L322-generation Range Rover.
With a supercharged V-8, it also should get up and move.
This Range Rover is now up for auction at no reserve until December 3.
Sadly, we have lost health and fitness celebrity Richard Simmons; he died this year at the age of 76. In an age where there are plenty of Instagram-perfect fitness influencers cluttering up social media feeds, making us all feel bad about that lunchtime cookie, Simmons was the sort of goofy but energetic person who could get you off the couch in a supportive manner. Here was no gym bro, but a happy-go-lucky soul who was genuinely funny. His appearance on the improv show Whose Line Is It Anyway might just be the most hilarious 10 minutes of television ever.
Why bring up Simmons? Well, a 2012 Range Rover that used to belong to him has found its way to Bring a Trailer (which, like Car and Driver, is part of Hearst Autos). It's the full-size version powered by a supercharged V-8, and it has just 18K miles on the odometer.
This Range Rover's understated silver paint and ivory leather interior stands in marked contrast to Simmons's frizzy hair and colorfully flamboyant outfits, but you can see why he chose it. Not every celebrity wants to be seen all the time, and part of a Range Rover's true luxury is in its discreet elegance. This is emphatically not a bright green Mercedes-AMG G-class or similar. It's not for showing off.
Under the hood, the supercharged 5.0-liter V-8 is good for 510 horsepower and 461 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission handles shifting duties with the unflappable poise of Jeeves the butler, and the adjustable air suspension will have you gliding over any rough pavement. Should your path prove more rugged than broken tarmac, it is after all a Land Rover product, far more competent in off-road use than most owners will usually engage in.
Other niceties include a 19-speaker Harman Kardon premium stereo, heated seats for four with the front seats also ventilated, factory navigation, and a surround-view camera to assist with parking. Simmons clearly ticked every box on the list when ordering this machine.
As a tidy, low-mileage example of the marque, this SUV shows that Richard Simmons may have been bouncy and ostentatious when he was performing, but among his other admirable qualities, the man had taste.
The miracle of the internet means you could bid on this Range Rover while lazing on the sofa. But that hardly seems in the proper spirit. Maybe do 10 jumping jacks, then fire up the laptop and place your bid. The no-reserve auction ends on December 3.
