A former Spandau Ballet singer who is accused of rape, fantasised about having sex with sleeping women, a court heard.

Ross Davidson, known as Ross William Wild, is said to have forced himself on several women and filmed the encounters.

The 36-year-old, who became the lead singer of Spandau Ballet in 2018 and starred in the West End musical We Will Rock You, is “very good looking, physically fit, charming and charismatic,” said prosecutor Richard Hearnden.

However, Mr Davidson has “a darker side” and “expected to get sex on demand,” Wood Green crown court heard.

Mr Davidson, who was born in Aberdeen, allegedly enjoyed role-playing rape scenarios and had “a kink” for having sex with sleeping women.

He is accused of a series of sex offences against five women, including raping three of them between 2013 and 2023.

Mr Hearnden said: “As a performer and as an individual, Wild was a bit of a sex symbol. He is very good-looking and physically fit. He sings, plays the guitar, and is said to be charming and charismatic.

“His darker side is not the first thing that many women and girls notice about him. But the women in this case can all attest to that sinister part of his personality. For it is alleged that he has raped, coerced, and sexually assaulted a number of young women over the last decade.

“It is often supposed that men such as the defendant, blessed with good looks and star quality, can get any girl he wants without having to resort to committing sexual offences, without having to resort to forcing himself on women, without having to resort to rape.

“Yet, the reality belies that supposition. In this case, many young women have come forward to tell the police that they have been victims of Mr Davidson’s predatory behaviour.

“It is because he expects to get sex on demand that he will resort to rape and sexual assault, if he is not given what he thinks he deserves.”

Mr Davidson is said to have secretly filmed himself raping the first woman after an argument at his flat in Finchley, North London, in October 2013.

After the encounter he asked: “Why do you look like you’ve been raped?”, and there was proof of this because he had taken footage of the incident, the court heard.

Mr Hearnden said the defence would argue the sex attack was role-playing, with the woman looking like a rape victim.

Mr Davidson is said to have sexually assaulted a second woman and filmed himself fondling her breasts.

The prosecutor said: “According to the complainant, the defendant said he had a particular fantasy.

“He said it was his fantasy, his desire, to have sex with a woman while she was asleep.”

A third woman was allegedly sexually assaulted by Davidson at the Cannes Film Festival in France, with more footage captured.

He is accused of filming a fourth woman committing a sex act on him without her consent and later raping her, before making her clean his home.

Mr Hearnden said: “She was being used as some sort of sexual slave. He wanted to have sexual intercourse five or six times a night. When she said it was too much, he forced her to have sex.”

The fifth victim is said to have woken to find Mr Davidson having sex with her.

Mr Davidson replaced Tony Hadley as Spandau Ballet’s singer in 2018, but when the band finished its tour in Europe, he claimed he was “ignored” by management.

A day after Mr Davidson told the band he was leaving, other members of Spandau Ballet appeared on national TV announcing they would not perform again unless Mr Hadley rejoined.

Speaking about his departure 11 months after joining the band, Davidson previously told The Sun: “I told Spandau I wanted to leave and they wished me luck. I couldn’t afford to be left on a shelf, not knowing where my next meal was coming from.

“I never even got to say that I quit, to own any part of my story. I was so humiliated.”

Mr Davidson, of Finchley, north London, has claimed all the encounters were consensual. He denies three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault, one count of voyeurism, one count of intimidation and one of controlling behaviour.

The trial continues.
