An Arctic blast will bring snow flurries and freezing -8C temperatures to Britain, new weather maps show. The whole of the country faces sub-zero temperatures, and the Midlands will be no exception.

WXCharts shows purple clouds running down from Scotland - where the snow is expected to be around 13cm deep in central areas - with flurries also forecast across north west England, Wales and the Midlands. The high pressure system was expected to sit over the country on Wednesday, February 12, with thick snow arriving from midday.

Western Scotland will also see lows of -6C, with the mercury falling to -2C in north western England, northern Wales and -1C in the south east of England, the Mirror reports. However the cold snap was expected to continue on Thursday, February 13, with temperatures falling to -8C in Scotland.

The Met Office's prediction for February 5-14 states that colder spells were "likely". It said: "It is likely to be much more settled across the much of the UK at first with plenty of clear or sunny spells, and whilst some rain is likely at times, there is likely to be plenty of dry weather through this period.

"Winds will generally be lighter and this will bring the risk of overnight frost and fog to many central and southern parts. Towards the end of this period there is a greater chance of unsettled conditions returning, especially in the north and west of the UK whilst southeastern parts more likely to be drier. Overall, temperatures will be close to normal for most, but it is likely to be mild at times in the northwest. Brief colder spells are likely here in between weather systems though."
