Exact date you should turn your heating on this year and how to cut your energy bills
Energy experts have revealed the exact date you should turn your heating on this year as the colder months approach.
They say the decision isn't just about comfort. It's also about managing energy costs, especially in light of last year's soaring energy bills.
They suggest the ideal date to turn on your heating this year is Sunday, October 29. This date coincides with the end of daylight saving time, a period when temperatures typically begin to dip.

Heating expert Mark McShane, from Boiler Cover UK, said: "Turning on your heating at the end of October is a good strategy, as it allows you to prepare for the colder weather ahead while also avoiding the risk of frozen pipes. Maintaining a minimum thermostat setting of 10°C can protect your pipes from freezing, which can lead to costly repairs."
If you're looking to keep energy costs in check this winter, there are several strategies you can employ. For example, upgrading your thermostat can ensure your heating system operates more efficiently, preventing energy wastage. Draught-proofing your home by sealing gaps around doors, windows, and floorboards can also help retain warmth, reducing the need for constant heating.
Additionally, wearing extra layers instead of cranking up the thermostat can save money, as can investing in soft furnishings like curtains and rugs, which help insulate your home. Mr McShane also advises turning down your thermostat by just 1°C, which can reduce your heating bill by up to 10%.
Regular maintenance is another crucial aspect of energy efficiency. Ensuring your radiators are clean and bleeding them regularly can prevent inefficiencies in your heating system. It's also wise to avoid covering radiators with clothes, as this can block heat from circulating effectively.
Finally, having your boiler serviced annually is essential for maintaining its efficiency and safety. An ageing or faulty boiler can significantly increase your heating costs, so it's important to ensure your system is in good working order before winter sets in.
