Exact date UK summer set to end with temperatures set to plunge
A dramatic weather map indicates that summer is set to come to an abrupt halt, with temperatures predicted to drop by 8C in the coming week.
The new Ventusky weather map for Tuesday, September 3, shows most of the UK covered in an ominous yellow hue, signifying widespread fog.
The country will experience thick fog on several occasions next week, with Tuesday expected to be the worst.
The densest fog is anticipated across mid Wales, where temperatures are forecasted to fall to around 15C - a significant drop from Monday's high of 23C recorded in Writtle, Essex. Rain is also predicted, particularly across mid and south Wales, and Southwest England, throughout Tuesday.
"Weak frontal systems could still provide some cloud and patchy outbreaks of rain at times, this most likely in northwestern areas, and there is a chance of some heavy thundery showers and more humid conditions in the south too," reads the Met Office's website on the period from Sunday, September 1 to Tuesday, September 10.
"The mostly settled conditions are expected to then win out, with high pressure building in from the southwest once more, with the chance of seeing a more widely showery spell towards the end of this period considered low.", reports the Mirror.
Forecasters say the unsettled and foggy start to September follows a brief warm spell to end August. It's understood that it will be warmer than Morocco as early as this week, according to meteorologists.
Nick Silkstone, deputy chief meteorologist at the Met Office, has forecasted a brief warm spell for parts of the UK, saying: "There is a warmer interlude of weather on the way for those in the south and east of the UK from the middle of the week. Temperatures on Wednesday could peak at 29C in the southeast, with some good spells of sunshine for much of England and Wales.
"While this initial warmth will be relatively short-lived, with a return towards average temperatures by Thursday, the weather will continue with a drier and more settled theme during the second half of the week under the influence of high pressure. The main exception to this will likely be the ongoing chance of some cloud and rain arriving across the northwest later in the week, though even here there should be some drier and brighter interludes."
