Forecasters have predicted the exact time 'very strong winds' will hit Glasgow after a red weather warning for wind was issued by the Met Office.

The national forecaster issued a 'danger to life' warning for Friday (January 24) earlier on Thursday. The warning, covering Glasgow in its entirety and surrounding areas, also warns of 'dangerous conditions' and 'damage to buildings and homes', with roofs expected to be blown off and power lines and trees downed.

Winds are expected to pick up around 2am Friday, growing strongest in the early afternoon, with maximum wind gusts of 88mph forecast for Glasgow city centre. Average wind speeds will reach around 36mph.

Outside the city, maximum wind gusts could reach 100mph on the coast in parts of Argyll and Bute. For reference, maximum wind gusts on Thursday morning have been around 16mph in Glasgow and are not expected to rise above 30mph for the rest of the day. Average wind speed has been at 8mph.

The red warning is active from 10am to 5pm Friday. An amber warning for wind will also be in place across Glasgow and the wider region from 1pm Friday to 6am Saturday, with the Met Office warning of flying debris, power cuts and travel disruption.

Glasgow is under a yellow warning for wind throughout from 6am to midnight on Friday, midnight to 3pm on Saturday, and 8am to 3pm on Sunday. A yellow warning for snow previously issued for Glasgow on Friday has been lifted, still covering Argyll and Bute.
