AEW will be presenting one of the biggest matches in Dynamite history tomorrow night (May 5) as The Inner Circle and The Pinnacle face each other in Blood and Guts.
The match, which follows the War Games concept, is happening for the first time in AEW but it was originally set to take place last year, before the pandemic put plans on hold.
Now, instead of it being The Inner Circle vs The Elite, it's The Pinnacle who will be taking on Chris Jericho's faction.
While some fans may be wondering why AEW didn't wait for crowds to come back fully before doing the match, Jericho says there's "no better time than now" for it to happen.
"This angle and storyline with MJF and Jericho, The Inner Circle and now The Pinnacle has been going on since September of last year," Jericho told Digital Spy exclusively.
"So to keep people guessing and keeping the right amount of explosiveness to it, now's the time for Blood and Guts. Now, you could also do Blood and Guts three months from now, but I think Tony [Khan] wanted to do it sooner rather than later.
"Once I saw his mindset for that I thought, 'well no better time than now'. We're kind of starting the angle with it, but the storyline started over a month ago when The Pinnacle was formed and they beat the crap out of the Inner Circle.
"Why continue to play grab-ass? Let's do Blood and Guts. We've been waiting for it since March 25th of last year, it was booked and ready to go and there's nothing more to wait for."
The storyline between the two factions started with a bang back in March, when MJF turned on The Inner Circle and brutally attacked them while introducing The Pinnacle.
The Inner Circle would then return weeks later and deliver a beatdown of their own to The Pinnacle. Since then the factions have been having a war of words and last week Jericho delivered an all-time great promo to give the match the hard sell.
"I think people are very excited, people are ready to see it," he continued. "The thing about wrestling is, you can never do something too early as long as the story is right.
"The worst thing you could do is wait too long to do something and I think at this point in time it's better to do it sooner rather than later.
"We're ready to go and we could [have gone last] week if we needed to because people are excited and invested and we built, in my opinion, one of the hottest stories on the show just over the last couple months."
While the match is a can't miss for AEW fans, don't expect it to be a gimmick that you'll see constantly replayed over the next few years.
"I was reading somewhere, 'well maybe they can do another Blood and Guts match.' No, no, no. This isn't [WWE] Hell in a Cell pay-per-view, where we have two Hell in a Cell [matches] just because you have to have it.
"We don't have to have Blood and Guts, the story, and the angle, and the rivalry demands it. So to me, that's the reason why you do Blood and Guts, because of the story you don't create the story because of Blood and Guts."
AEW Dynamite airs Thursdays at 1am on Fite TV in the UK and on Fridays at 11pm on ITV4.
