The Bay newcomer Marsha Thomason has spoken about a set injury she sustained while filming the ITV series.

The actress recently came in as the lead of the crime drama and made her debut last night (January 12), taking on the role of DS Jenn Townsend following Morven Christie's departure as DS Lisa Armstrong.

However, it seems the filming wasn't the smoothest of rides for Thomason, the star revealing exclusively to Digital Spy that she suffered a back issue while filming a nightclub sequence.

"There was a scene in a nightclub, there's a scene where Jenn gets injured," she recalled. "And doing the repetitive motion – this was just physically hard – I hurt my back, and that was like day two of filming or something.

"It was not great. And so I was seeing a chiropractor throughout – it's fine now. But that was physically difficult."

The star also explained how some emotional scenes took a physical toll, causing her headaches, especially when trying to get into her character's mindset.

"There were a couple of scenes where Jenn is alone," Thomason said. "One is in the car, one is in the bathroom mirror where she's feeling an immense amount of anxiety, and is doing her breathing exercises and trying to calm herself down.

"And I found those difficult. First of all, to get to that place, and then also it really gives you a headache physically. It's weird. Those two are the ones for me that were the most difficult, because they were physically difficult."

Thomason also spoke to us about replacing Christie as the show's lead, revealing that she didn't "initially" have any nerves.

"I didn't feel any of that actually, but then as my first day approached, really my feelings were more about the nerves of being in a new job in an established show, you know that kind of thing," she said.

"I was definitely aware that those are big shoes to fill, [Morven] was so great as Lisa. I was a bit like Jenn really, because it's like: 'New day, new job with these people who've all been working together for ages', but everybody was brilliant.

"The cast reached out to me and we started a WhatsApp group, we did some Zooms, so I already felt a sense of connection with them when I arrived on the first day."

The Bay season 3 airs on ITV.
