Casualty spoilers follow.

Casualty is set to return to our screens with a special episode centred around the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, focusing on how the Emergency Department and the home lives of the staff have all been devastated in the last 7 months.

Jacob Masters actor Charles Venn has spoken exclusively to Digital Spy for our brand new Soap Scoop podcast series about the episode, telling us that it's going to be an emotional affair.

"It's hugely important for both Casualty and Holby City to reflect these times," he said. "We need to represent it as we are the flagship show as one of the leading medical dramas on UK television so it's incumbent on us to at least reflect these times.

"We are talking about one of the most significant moments in history – we've never had anything like this, and God willing, we never have something like this again.

"It would be remiss of us not to acknowledge that. I don't want to say we are paying homage, but for everyone who has lost loved ones during this time, it was a must. It would be very strange to ignore it.

"We have shot that particular episode already and I really think it's something special. It's a real tearjerker and a real rollercoaster."

Charles also spoke on our podcast about the show's 35th anniversary next year, teasing that it is going to be "cataclysmic" for certain characters. Hopefully that won't get in the way of Jacob and Connie's blossoming romance.

New episodes of Digital Spy's Soap Scoop podcast drop every Friday at 8am and are available on all major platforms, including Spotify and Apple Podcasts.

Casualty is currently on a hiatus after running out of episodes to air due to the coronavirus pandemic disrupting filming.
