Casualty spoilers follow.

Casualty is set to return in January for a special coronavirus (COVID-19) themed episode, that will show just how physically and emotionally demanding the pandemic has been on everyone working in the ED.

It's been rumoured for a while that someone is going to die, and Connie Beauchamp actress Amanda Mealing has confirmed that is the case in an exclusive interview with Digital Spy.

"Connie takes the death of one of the team personally," the actress told us. "She takes personal responsibility for it and it weighs on her heavily. It also significantly impacts everyone on the team.

"Her and Jacob start strong but you'll see in the COVID episode that she won't be able to forgive herself for letting one of the team down. She feels that she can't be having a good time and living the high life after what she sees as her failing.

"What we didn't want to do though was drag everyone week after week through COVID. We all experienced it, we all lived through it, and we acknowledge it – because it is part of our lives now – but I don't think people want to sit down every Saturday and trawl through that.

"It's heavy and it's a lot. I don't think anyone wants to sit through that every week. We do have to move on in the following weeks but COVID is still a part of the ED experience."

Fellow star Charles Venn previously told us that the special would be "a real rollercoaster" – something Amanda has now echoed, stating: "It's the best script we've produced in a long, long, long time.

"To be able to give a couple of months of intensity and sacrifice, and put that into an hour's episode and still make it coherent, is genius."

Casualty returns on Saturday January 2, 2021, airing on BBC One.
