Gentleman Jack first aired on our screens nearly a year ago now, and the BBC wasted no time in snapping it up for a second season just a day after its premiere.

While we've been waiting for more news about the second series pretty much ever since, one of the show's stars has now shared a little update on the new episodes as Gemma Whelan sat down for an exclusive chat with Digital Spy.

"I've had the first four scripts – I've had them for a long time, since Christmas, actually," Gemma told us. "And there's some more fantastic stuff for Marian and Anne (Suranne Jones) and the family to get up to."

Gentleman Jack sees Doctor Foster star Suranne Jones step into the role of real-life lesbian pioneer Anne Lister, with Sally Wainwright adapting the series from Anne's coded diaries, as she defies society's expectations and gender roles and embarks on a romance with another woman.

Game of Thrones star Gemma plays Marian Lister, Anne's quieter and much put-upon younger sister, while Timothy West plays their father Captain Lister and Gemma Jones stars as their aunt Anne.

But while Gemma promises that there's a lot to look forward to about season 2, she also confirmed that Gentleman Jack season 2 is one of the many TV shows that has been caught up in the coronavirus pandemic as productions plans have had to be shifted back.

"I do know that we were meant to start filming in June, and of course because of the current situation, that has currently been pushed to September and we all hope that may happen," Gemma added.

"But we've all just got to be flexible and open and wait until the right time when everyone's safe and it's ok to get on with things."

Gentleman Jack fans have been clamouring for a season 2 since the first season's emotional finale, but it looks like they may just have to wait a little bit longer.

Thankfully, creator Sally Wainwright has previously teased a bit more about what we can expect to see in the new episodes, telling Digital Spy last year that season 2 will pick up in the aftermath of Anne and Ann Walker's (Sophie Rundle) wedding.

"They move into Shibden together in series two and it's about how they negotiate their married life, conspicuously in public, and how they deal with their detractors and the effect that has on their relationship as well," Wainwright explained.

Gentleman Jack aired on BBC One and is available to purchase on DVD and digital now.
