BBC Two's new comedy show Ghosts has been a huge success since it aired.

Written by and starring the cast of Horrible Histories, it's the first time the group have had a show on post-watershed, with it airing at 9.30pm.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy, writer and actor Mathew Baynton said he doesn't feel worried about cutting off their dedicated younger audience with the time slot.

"I think older kids are not interested in things they think are meant to be for them. Having a show on that is technically not for them only makes them want to watch it and parents can look at it and judge," he said.

"I was a little worried adult viewers would watch it at 9.30 expecting something 'less family'. Some reviews have said this is great, why isn't it on at tea time when families can watch it together, but I can't really answer that.

"I look at Doctor Who, my son is eight and watches Harry Potter, and there is plenty of stuff in those things that is pretty terrifying, who knows?"

The show centres around young couple Alison and Mike, who inherit a large manor house – and all the ghosts that haunt it.

Following a near-death experience, Alison ends up being able to see and talk to the ghosts, giving them their first link to the modern world in years.

Speaking about how they decided who would play which character, Mat added: "There aren't explicit conversations about who will play who. With everything we've done, with Yonderland it was dictated by schedule because you needed to be in make-up.

"As we were coming up with the characters, it was kind of obvious who would be who. We’ve worked together for so long, we know where we will fit in the shape of the things that we will do.

"Sometimes it was because it was someone's idea, so it was obvious they would have fun playing that part, sometimes it's just a quality that suits certain people.

"The only exception on this one is when we came up with the politician idea and I thought Ben [Willabond] would play that and then it was Simon [Farnaby]."
