Hollyoaks spoilers follow.
Sarah Jayne Dunn has teased tense scenes to come for Mandy, Darren and Nancy following the wedding cliffhanger in Hollyoaks.
Friday's (March 12) first-look episode on E4 finally showed the truth coming out about Ella's involvement in Jordan Price's death, when Darren found the note she'd written to Charlie in prison.
Darren had borrowed Ella's diary and read the note aloud in front of Nancy mere moments before he was supposed to be sharing his wedding toast to Mandy.
Looking ahead to next week, Sarah Jayne Dunn teased exclusively to Digital Spy that Mandy's first reaction to the revelation will be complete "denial".
"She's still clinging to the possibility that it's fine and everything is going to be okay. But ultimately it's Ella who says: 'No, it was me'. Ella can't take the lying anymore, so Mandy can't hide it after her daughter confesses," the actress has hinted.
"We then see the fallout of that and the consequences of what Mandy has done. We see what it means for Mandy and Ella, Mandy and Darren, Mandy and Luke – because Luke knew and didn't say anything. She also told Charlie not to say anything.
"She has crossed so many lines and needs to deal with that. And the consequences of Nancy finding out the truth were never going to be good. Me and Jess Fox have got a huge scene together after the wedding."
While the episode left off with Mandy fumbling to defend herself, she will have to come up with some answers when Nancy confronts her in upcoming episodes.
"Me and Jess got [a long scene] and it was a six-minute scene — literally pages and pages," Dunn recalled. "I was like: 'Wow, there's more, and there's more!' We were excited and when something like that is on paper, you can't ever tell what it's going to be like until you do it. It was good and there were so many layers to the scene. The sympathy and the power balance between the two characters bounces back and forth throughout the scene. One minute you're on Nancy's side and then you feel for Mandy.
"It's an outpouring of emotion. There's nowhere to hide with the scene, as Nancy wants answers and Mandy knows the game is up. We both finished the scene and agreed that we enjoyed it."
Because Mandy has been allowing Charlie to take the rap for Ella for months now, Dunn admitted she expects viewers to be "totally split" over the backlash faced by her character next week.
"The people who have been hating this side of Mandy and what she's done — and rightfully so because she's out of order — they'll be relieved that she's getting her comeuppance and the truth is out. On the flip side, when Mandy starts explaining the lengths that she's gone to, I think any parents out there will be able to sympathise with why she's done what she's done.
"A few episodes later, I've got some nice scenes with Steph Waring – Mandy chats to Cindy about why she's gone to the extremes that she's gone to. She stands by her actions even though she knows they were wrong."
One big question is whether there's any hope for Darren and Mandy to rebuild their relationship, considering spoilers have revealed that Darren will sleep with Nancy in new scenes.
"Well he's slept with Nancy before and she's forgiven him, so we can forget that," she said. "It's a difficult one because Nancy and Darren have got a lot of history there — they've been on and off over the years. But Mandy and Darren also have something really special and it was genuine. They hurt so many people getting together and they didn't do it for nothing – they had real love, passion and chemistry.
"That's always going to be there, but it's just whether Darren can forgive what Mandy has done and see where she's coming from. Also, is he really rekindling things with Nancy or is that just a familiar place for him to go?"
Hollyoaks currently airs new episodes from Mondays to Fridays at 6.30pm on Channel 4, with first look screenings at 7pm on E4.
