Hollyoaks star Kieron Richardson has weighed in on his character Ste Hay's new storyline after his character recently returned to the soap following a 12-month break.

Ste left the village last year after his far-right extremism storyline came to a deadly end, and his return earlier this month has seen Ste determined to turn his life around and make amends for his past behaviour.

However, speaking exclusively to Digital Spy, actor Kieron Richardson has suggested that his character's new storyline isn't strictly a 'redemption story', explaining that Ste has "always had good qualities" during his time on the soap.

"I don't like to think that we are doing stories just to help redeem Ste," Kieron told Digital Spy.

"Ste has always had good qualities and family has always meant a lot to him, even if we go back to the days when he was with John Paul and he was supporting him through all the stuff that John Paul went through with Finn, which was awful.

"We saw then that Ste did have a heart and he isn't evil through and through, so I wouldn't like to say that we are doing this just to redeem the character," he continued.

Kieron's comments come as Ste is set to take control as head of the Lomax family in the aftermath of Sid Sumner's life-changing injury, with the character stepping in to support Sid (Billy Price) following his partial leg amputation.

"I love the fact that Ste has stepped up to be head of the family. It shows that his head is in the right place, he's very serious about it and family means everything to him," Kieron continued.

"He's got to put a lot of wrongs right and he wants to get Sid on the right path."

As for where the storyline will go next, the actor added that he hopes Ste will continue to play a supportive role for Sid in the long-term – and praised actor Billy Price for his brilliant work on the soap.

"I don't know too much about future storylines at the moment. I assume that given they all live in the same house together that Ste will be playing a father figure role," he said.

"Stuart isn't around anymore and I do feel like me and Billy [Price] have good chemistry, so I'd love to have more scenes with Billy. He's amazing and definitely a star of the future. Even going back to last year when [Billy] first joined, he is so natural and he thinks of things that aren't even in the script.

"He's incredible, so when you give him things like this, he can just do it. It's like a walk in the park for him. He makes it look so natural and so easy, and from someone who has been doing this a long time, I'm like, 'Wow I need to learn some things off this kid'."

Hollyoaks continues Mondays through Thursdays with first-look episodes at 7pm on E4, followed by repeat airings on Channel 4 the following evening at 6.30pm.
