Home and Away spoilers follow for UK viewers.
Home and Away legend Ray Meagher has hinted that huge tensions are on the way between his character Alf Stewart and newcomer Kieran Baldivis.
Martha cut ties with Kieran (Rick Donald) years ago as his struggle with alcoholism was spiralling out of control. Now claiming to be a reformed character, Kieran wants another chance.
Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy about the drama to come, Ray explained: "Alf is a discerning man and he has seen many interesting characters come in and out of the Bay over the years, but Kieran's arrival is especially meaningful.
"Alf keeps his wits about him and is interested to know about Kieran's past – his whole past – and the more he finds out, the less sure he is that Kieran's arrival is a welcome one in the Bay.
"Alf cares deeply about his wife, his family and his community and he will do everything in his power to protect the lives of those he loves.
"That now extends to Kieran, but what is best for Kieran may not be what Kieran believes it to be. To say it causes some tension would be an understatement."
Asked whether this could drive a wedge between Alf and Martha, Ray replied: "When you have a husband who wants to protect his wife, and a mother who wants to protect her son, both fighting equally as hard to ensure their family unit remains intact, the fork in the road has to appear at some point. But I think Alf and Martha are strong enough to get through anything."
In next week's episodes on Channel 5, viewers will see that Kieran is secretly drinking again. It seems that history is doomed to repeat itself, especially when Kieran is poorly-behaved in some of his private interactions with Alf and Roo.
Ray added: "Kieran is a complex person whose addiction has influenced his poor behaviour over the years. Kieran is a good guy deep down, but alcoholism has led him to make some very bad choices.
"Alf doesn't stand for bad behaviour, especially when people's safety is involved. He has a big heart and will support anyone through a challenging time, but when Kieran refuses to face his demons, battle lines are drawn to protect Martha and Roo."
Home and Away airs weekdays at 1.15pm and 6pm on Channel 5, with first look screenings at 6.30pm on 5STAR. Selected classic episodes are available via Amazon Prime Video in the UK.
