Home and Away spoilers follow for UK viewers.
Home and Away star Shane Withington has spoken to Digital Spy about the show's big Susie McAllister twist, revealing that he always knew the deceptive character wasn't to be trusted.
The show introduced former McLeod's Daughters star Bridie Carter in the role of Susie a few weeks ago. Susie's arrival was initially teased as a potential chance of happiness for Shane's character John Palmer following his split from Marilyn Chambers.
However, next week's episodes on Channel 5 feature a big bombshell as Susie is shown to be playing John for a fool.
When Susie finds herself alone in John's house, she seizes the opportunity to snoop through his financial records and take photos. It's clear from that point onwards that her romantic interest in John is totally fake.
Asked whether it was a shock to read this twist in the scripts, Shane told Digital Spy: "No, I knew from the start that John was going to get played because we wanted to do the story justice.
"In the beginning, the story is funny and it's fun and it's challenging, and then it turns to tragedy. It's a really good story arc that continues to give long after.
"The writers have done a great job at linking other storylines to it. It's a fascinating story arc to follow."
Shane noted that John has been quicker to trust Susie than he often is with other Summer Bay newcomers.
He said: "Generally when a newcomer comes to the Bay, John has a fight with them and then becomes their friend! Not in this instance!
"He's lonely and Susie is beautiful and good at seducing him, so she plays John like a fish. John is out of his depth – he's quite innocent and vulnerable in this storyline."
On working with Bridie Carter for the story, Shane added: "I cannot praise Bride Carter enough. She was an absolute delight. She worked even in between takes when she was just standing on the set, she was continually improving her character. I learnt a lot from Bridie.
"She's a very fine actress, very funny and a really loving person, so it was lovely to work with her."
Home and Away airs weekdays at 1.15pm and 6pm on Channel 5 (UK) and Mondays to Thursdays at 7pm on Channel 7 (Australia). Selected classic episodes are available via Amazon Prime Video in the UK.
