Home and Away spoilers follow from Thursday's 5STAR first look episode in the UK (January 28).
Home and Away star Sarah Roberts has spoken exclusively to Digital Spy about the show's big Witness X twist.
UK viewers watching 5STAR's first-look broadcasts have just seen the game-changing moment that Sarah's character Willow Harris is revealed as the mystery person who has betrayed Colby Thorne.
Willow was later seen arriving for a secret meeting with detective Angelo Rosetta, handing over Colby's confession as she'd been wearing a recording device throughout the previous conversation.
Speaking to Digital Spy about the shock storyline, Sarah explained: "I was initially very excited when Louise Bowes, our beautiful writer, told me about this twist. Tim Franklin, who plays Colby, and I were very excited to see what the fans would think and to sink our teeth into this storyline.
"I don't think the fans will see it coming. I know a lot of the directors even who have been working at Home and Away were surprised to hear that Willow was going to be Witness X.
"Louise told me about this storyline initially. I recall she initially told me that Colby would be going to jail because someone was going to testify against him. She asked me to guess who I thought it was.
"Never in a million years would I have guessed it would have been Willow! I think it's a great twist and it has been really fun yet challenging to play."
Asked why Willow made such a drastic decision, Sarah replied: "Willow could see that Colby was spiralling out of control. Things were continuing to get worse and Willow could not see a way out of this.
"It looked like Colby was going to go to jail and take the rest of his 'River Family' with him. Willow couldn't let this happen, so she decided to make the ultimate sacrifice, even if it means being ostracised by the rest of her 'family'.
"I think if Colby had kept his cool and had steered away from becoming slightly villainous, Willow would definitely have thought differently about her actions.
"The fact that Colby was becoming aggressive and almost had blinkers on, so to speak, and wasn't able to think about anyone but himself meant that Willow was left with no other choice in the matter.
"I think at first fans will be shocked at Willow's decision, but I'm hoping with time they will come to understand why she had to do what she did."
Viewers can see the fallout from this storyline in the coming days as Willow has to testify against Colby in court, shocking him and the rest of Summer Bay.
Home and Away airs weekdays at 1.15pm and 6pm on Channel 5, with first look screenings at 6.30pm on 5STAR.
