Exeter City have to manage games better after letting leads slip
Exeter City captain Pierce Sweeney said that the squad needs to make sure they manage games better after letting slip a lead at Northampton Town. The Grecians were 1-0 up at the Cobblers and in control of the game, but two defensive mistakes cost them as they came away with nothing.
Tristan Crama’s first goal for the club had put City ahead in the early stages as with just eight minutes gone, he headed home from a Reece Cole corner. Gary Caldwell’s side were much the better side but couldn’t make that dominance count.
Midway through the second half an error from goalkeeper Joe Whitworth was pounced upon by Callum Morton to level things up. And then ten minutes later, City’s backline were all over the place as Cameron McGeehan was left to poke home what proved to be the winner in the 2-1 victory.

Having been ahead in midweek at Walsall and failed to see out the victory, it is now successive games in which City’s early dominance has ended up counting for nothing. The skipper said that City should have won the game, but when they did concede, had to regroup and ensure that the least they came away with was the point.
“It is never easy here, we done pretty well in the first half, had some good opportunities and I feel we should be more than a goal up,” Sweeney said. “Then it is an uphill battle for them, but we let them into the game with disappointing goals. It is a performance where we look back on and bits and bobs we can do better. We should have scored more goals and didn’t show up in the second half.
“We had more opportunities to threaten their keeper and should be at least 2-0 up at half time. We were the better team for the first 60 minutes, but we will move onto next week.
“We can learn, we can't expect it to be easy. We have to regroup when they equalize and get at least a point and manage the game better. It is a learning curve and experience for everyone. We will go again next week and go all guns blazing.”
