Amazon's The Expanse has added Murder in the First star Kathleen Robertson to its cast.

The sixth and final season of the show is on the horizon in December, with Deadline dropping the news that Robertson will have a significant role in the science fiction drama.

Robertson will be playing insurgency leader Marco Inaros's (Tyrant star Keon Alexander) trusted confidant Rosenfeld Guoliang, who is willing to do whatever it takes for Belter independence.

The Canadian actress memorably played Detective Hildy Mulligan in Murder in the First, and has also appeared in Beverly Hills, 90210, Bates Motel and horror movie The Vatican Tapes throughout her career.

While this December's final season could be the last battle for Belter independence, showrunner Naren Shankar recently hinted The Expanse could spin off in new directions even after its second cancellation.

"You know, honestly, that would be more of a question for our studio, for Alcon, they control the property," he told EW, trying not to give too much away.

"But what I will say is that there's definitely more to tell and I'm sure [writers] Ty [Franck] and Daniel [Abraham] would say exactly the same thing. But yeah, that's probably about as much as I can say at this point."

The sci-fi series originally aired on Syfy in the US, before it was cancelled following its third season. Amazon Prime Video swooped in to save the show, bringing it back for three more seasons to carry out the writers' vision.

Season six will take place in the aftermath of Marco Inaros's Belter leading a deadly assault on earth, but an even bigger threat emerged on the horizon when an unknown ship appeared armed with the protomolecule.

The Expanse will return for its sixth and final season (for now) on December 10, 2021 on Amazon Prime Video.
