A coin expert has advised Brits to rummage through their change for three specific coins that combined could fetch more than £3,000. The catch, however, is that for two particular coins, certain misprint errors are needed.

In a video uploaded to social media platform TikTok, the account Coin Collector UK advised: "These three coins are worth three thousand pounds and can be found in your change."

The first treasure to hunt for is a 2014 £2 coin, released for the centenary of the First World War, showcasing Lord Kitchener’s iconic image. The coin enthusiast elaborated: "There is an extremely rare error on the Lord Kitchener worth £800 pounds. You need to check if yours doesn't say the words ‘£2’ on the back, this is the error."

He continued by highlighting the uniqueness of the misprint: "It's called a mule error and very few have been found collectors will pay hundreds for this coin at auction. The normal one is worth £2."

The second valuable coin to search for is a specialised 50p piece minted for the London 2012 Olympics, which features a child’s sketch of a high jumping athlete. Coin collectors should keep their eyes peeled for the elusive 2009 version of this coin.

"The Olympic athletics from the Olympic series can be worth over £200," he said. "The rare version is dated 2009 on the back. Less than 20,000 of these were sold. Collectors will pay up to £250 pounds for one in great condition. The 2011 version is worth £2."

Lastly, he shed light on another Olympic coin that holds a value significantly higher than its face value. "This time the aquatics, which can be worth £2,000 plus." This 2011 coin features an image of a swimmer and is only valuable if the lines depicting water cover the swimmer’s face - a feature that was altered in later versions of the coin.

He further explained: "The rare original one will have lines covering the face like those on the body. Very few of these were minted and they sell for crazy money because of this. Always check any of these if you find them."
