Accommodation, flights, food, entertainment and shopping - it really does all add up when you're on holiday, and often there's no way of avoiding this.

But if you're yet to book a trip for this year, you'll want to know a key piece of information shared by a seasoned expert that could slash the cost of your hotel stay, leaving you with more money to spend on the things you want to.

Conor O’Neill, travel expert at money-saving community LatestDeals.co.uk, has lifted the lid on some common holiday-related rip-offs that are easily avoided if you know what to do instead. He's offered some valuable advice which has helped him to save money in the past, and he's keen to help others to do the same.

And one of the most simple - and effective - things you can do to save some cash is book your holiday to begin on a Sunday - as this is 'often the cheapest' night of the week.

Drawing on his own experiences, he said: "I booked a double room at Hotel Abitart in Rome for just £17 on a Sunday, compared to higher rates on other days. If your travel schedule is flexible, consider including a Sunday night in your stay to reduce costs.

"This is because most holiday trips leave on a Sunday, and start on either a Saturday or Monday. Sunday nights have the lowest occupancy rates, so hotels discount to try and fill it up."

If you haven't got a holiday booked yet but you still want to get away someplace warm, don't worry - sometimes, waiting until the last minute can have real financial benefit, despite what many people might believe.

Conor explained: "Booking at the last minute can score you great deals. I found that a stay at Dreams Jardín Tropical Resort in Tenerife was cheaper when booked a week in advance.

"While it might not suit everyone’s planning style, last-minute deals can be a fantastic way to save. Secret Escapes can be a great tool for this and you can often stack deals with discount codes."
