Multiple reports say explosives were found in the car of Thomas Matthew Crooks, who was identified by the FBI as the man who opened fire at the July 13 rally
Thomas Matthew Crooks, the man alleged by the FBI to have attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump at a campaign rally on July 13, had explosives in his car and home according to multiple new reports.
The Wall Street Journal , CNN , the New York Times and the Associated Press reported the news, citing unnamed law enforcement sources.
The Secret Service previously said that Crooks had been "neutralized" and was dead in the aftermath of the shooting, which took place in Butler, Penn.
One bystander, whose identity has not been released, was killed. Two others were critically injured, according to a spokesperson at Allegheny General Hospital.
The AP, Reuters and The New York Times all reported that Crooks was a registered Republican. In 2021 he donated $15 to a political action committee supporting Democratic politicians.
The Associated Press reports that the military has no records of Crooks ever serving.

At a press briefing late on Saturday, July 13, Kevin Rojek, Special Agent in Charge, FBI Field Office in Pittsburgh, said authorities do not know the shooter's motive.
CNN reports that the outlet briefly spoke to Crooks’ father, Matthew Crooks, late on July 13. Matthew Crooks said he was still trying to find out “what the hell is going on,” and declined to talk about his son until he spoke with law enforcement.
