Next year, the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War will be commemorated, and it's reported that the UK is planning a four-day celebration. This may include an additional bank holiday in the summer, resulting in a long weekend.

The 8th of May signifies Victory in Europe Day when Germany surrendered unconditionally in 1945, while the 15th of August marks Japan's surrender, effectively ending the war. Although a specific summer weekend has not yet been selected for the extended four-day break, it's anticipated that authorities will make an announcement soon.

Both dates are under consideration with an announcement expected shortly, as per national newspaper reports. The proposal involves either creating a long weekend from May 9 to 12 by clearing schedules or adding August 22 as an extra day to the summer bank holiday on August 25, turning it into a four-day festivity.

Existing bank holidays include New Year's Day on 1 January, which falls on a Wednesday, followed by Good Friday on 18 April. Then comes the Easter Bank Holiday on 21 April, followed by the early May bank holiday on Monday 5 May, and the late May bank holiday a few weeks later on 26 May.

The next bank holiday falls on 25 August, a Monday, otherwise known as the summer bank holiday. This is followed by 25 December and Boxing Day during the Christmas period.

Despite calls for additional bank holidays to mark significant events in recent times, these suggestions are often overlooked.

Earlier this year, the UK almost gained an extra day off when England narrowly missed out on winning the European Championships.

The Liberal Democrats were at the forefront of demands for an additional bank holiday after England secured a 2-1 victory over the Netherlands in the semi-final. Speaking at the Nato summit in Washington, Sir Keir Starmer, the Labour Party leader and Prime Minister, stated: "We should certainly mark the occasion, I don't want to jinx it. I went to the last Euros final, I don't want to go through that again. I don't want to jinx anything but we must mark it in some way." The PM further added: "But the most important thing is getting it over the line on Sunday."
