Next year, the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War will be commemorated, and it's reported that the UK is planning a four-day celebration. This is expected to include an additional bank holiday in the summer, resulting in a long weekend.

The 8th of May signifies Victory in Europe Day when Germany surrendered unconditionally in 1945, while the 15th of August marks Japan's surrender, effectively ending the war. Although a specific summer weekend has not yet been selected for the extended four-day break, it's anticipated that authorities will make an announcement soon.

Both dates are under consideration with an announcement expected shortly, as per national newspaper reports. The proposal includes either creating a long weekend by clearing schedules from 9th to 12th May or adding 22nd August as an extra day to the summer bank holiday on 25th August, turning it into a four-day celebration.

Existing bank holidays include New Year's Day on 1st January, which falls on a Wednesday, followed by Good Friday on 18th April. Then comes the Easter Bank Holiday on 21st April, followed by the early May bank holiday on Monday 5th May, and the late May bank holiday a few weeks later on 26th May.

The next bank holiday falls on 25 August, a Monday, otherwise referred to as the summer bank holiday. This is followed by 25 December and Boxing Day during the festive season. Despite frequent requests for additional bank holidays to commemorate significant contemporary events, these appeals are often overlooked.

Earlier this year, the UK narrowly missed out on an extra day off when England nearly clinched victory in the European Championships.

The Liberal Democrats were at the forefront of demands for an additional bank holiday after England's 2-1 triumph over the Netherlands in the semi-finals. Speaking at the Nato summit in Washington, Sir Keir Starmer, the Labour Party leader and Prime Minister, stated: "We should certainly mark the occasion, I don't want to jinx it. I went to the last Euros final, I don't want to go through that again. I don't want to jinx anything but we must mark it in some way." The PM further added: "But the most important thing is getting it over the line on Sunday."
