I was an extra in James McAvoy's Glasgow film at The Barras and it was a 00's time warp

The Barrowlands in Glasgow's East End were a wash of double denim, platform trainers and glitter make up on Thursday night when filming took place for James McAvoy's directorial debut.

Gig-goers were asked to don their 2000s finest to be an extra in a nightclub scene in 'California Schemin' - about two Scottish lads that conned their way into the music industry in the early noughties. Silibil N' Brains were a Dundee duo who duped the music industry into believing they were American so they would be taken seriously as rap artists and ended up touring with Eminem.

The crew took over The Barrowlands, with live acts performing throughout the night and Hollywood superstar, and Drumchapel native, James McAvoy directing the crowd.

Charlotte Montgomery and her sisters Hollie Stewart and Lisa Simpson were extras in the scene and said the gig was like going back in time. The Barrowlands scene is to depict when Silibil N' Brains supported rap group D12, with James McAvoy directing the crowd on how to react to Séamus McLean Ross and Samuel Bottomley who play the duo.

Charlotte, 40, found out about the gig from social media, she said: "We were teenagers in the early 2000s so the filming was like a time warp. Loads of people made a big effort with their clothes - there were space buns and vintage tracksuits and bucket hats. All the tunes were from the period and we were all on the soft drinks so it felt like being at a school disco.

"Mobiles were banned so it was like being at a gig in the 2000s before everyone held up their phones and recorded everything. James McAvoy was directing and he was great, giving us direction and mingling with the crowd to give pointers and tell us how to react - we had a great experience."

The sisters created their 2000s looks with mostly clothes from the time period, borrowing from colleagues and raiding their own wardrobes.

Charlotte added: "I'd held on to ancient TopShop and Miss Selfridge pieces so they came in handy after all this time!"

California Schemin is filming around Glasgow now and due to be released in 2025.
