F1 Miami Grand Prix - LIVE!

Charles Leclerc was unable to reassert his authority in the Formula One 2022 world title race with victory in F1’s inaugural race around Miami.

Saturday qualifying saw the championship leader stick his Ferrari on pole position with a fantastic lap, almost matched by teammate Carlos Sainz to clock a 1-2 for the Scuderia.

In third was Max Verstappen, victorious a fortnight ago in Emilia Romagna where Leclerc spun out late on but with an error of his own as he began his final qualifying lap yesterday.

But the Dutchman leapt off the line to swoop to second place early on, before getting the job done on Leclerc and building a big lead.

Lando Norris crashed out on lap 41 to bring out a safety car, re-energising the race and pushing Leclerc right on his rival’s tail.

However, Verstappen held on with Sainz coming home third ahead of a pushing Sergio Perez, and the two Mercedes of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton.

Pierre Gasly on his role in the shunt

Sunday 8 May 2022 23:16 , Marc Mayo

“Let’s start with the beginning, Fernando [Alonso] crashed into me at Turn 1 the lap before, which basically broke the rear-right of the car so we tried to go for one more lap to see if we could continue.

“But the car was too damaged and on the way back to the pits we had contact with Norris. Yeah, I was trying to turn right and let the guys past but Lando came and unfortunately we had contact.”

Lando Norris gives his take on the crash

Sunday 8 May 2022 23:13 , Marc Mayo

“It’s tough. I’ve looked at it a few times now, it’s tricky and I don’t know if [Gasly] had damage or something. I left space obviously, I knew he was on my right. The track kind of kinks to the right and I’m going with the flow of the circuit and it didn’t look like he was.

“He was looking in his right mirror... I don’t know. I thought I did what I normally do but it just ended up a silly accident - quite annoyed I guess as we could have scored a few points today but it happens.”

Toto Wolff discusses the race

Sunday 8 May 2022 23:02 , Marc Mayo

“We were betting for a safety car for George but it went against Lewis. There are no happy or not happy moments, just a bit down, we are third-quickest on the road and in a bit of no man’s land. This is where we are, behind the Red Bulls and Ferrari.

“We had a good sessions on Friday and we must dissect why that is because we are not on top of it at the moment.”

Lewis Hamilton reacts to not pitting under safety car

Sunday 8 May 2022 22:55 , Marc Mayo

“I really don’t know, in that scenario I have no clue where everyone is. When the team say, ‘It’s your choice’... I don’t have the information to make the decision. That’s what your job is! Make the decision for me, you’ve got all the details - I don’t. So that’s what you rely on the guys for but today they gave it to me and I didn’t understand it.

“But it’s just a bit unfortunate on the safety car and at least we got points today, we’re finishing, reliability is good. We just have to keep trying, I’m excited to at one stage take a step forward, which we haven’t yet.”

“No upgrades ever needed, you just need to dye your hair! To be honest, we’ve had the pace all weekend - qualifying was the anomaly and we were really frustrated to be P18. We benefited from the collisions in front but we were right there catching the cars in front. Very happy.”

Red Bull boss Christian Horner gives his reaction

Sunday 8 May 2022 22:43 , Marc Mayo

“After the safety car, we were quite lucky Ferrari didn’t pit for Softs. But then once Charles was in DRS we couldn’t shake him off. Max is in so much pressure it’s easy to make mistakes. It took about five, six laps for break the DRS and he managed it from there.

“The problem is DRS is so powerful, we couldn’t drop them after sector one. Finally, Charles had a bit of a moment and Max used it to build a lead.”

A five-second penalty for Magnussen, who was already out of the points. No further action for Schumacher having retired after wiping out Vettel.

Verstappen gives his take - and is asked if he fancies a stint in boxing...

Sunday 8 May 2022 22:17 , Marc Mayo

“I think I’ll stick to racing! Incredibly happy, an incredible Sunday.”

Leclerc up next

Sunday 8 May 2022 22:16 , Marc Mayo

“We struggled quite a bit with the Mediums particularly, on the Hard we were very competitive. I thought I could get Max at one point but they had the advantage, it was fun. We need to keep pushing and I hope now we can do a step up.”

Sainz reacts

Sunday 8 May 2022 22:14 , Marc Mayo

“Checo was very difficult to keep behind but we managed to keep the volume for a very good result. It wasn’t easy, it’s been a tough race with the tyres and heat - the car was moving a lot. But we got what we deserved, a P3.”

CHEQUERED FLAG!

Sunday 8 May 2022 22:08 , Marc Mayo

Verstappen takes the win and bites eight points into Leclerc’s championship lead, the Ferrari driver coming home second ahead of Sainz and Perez!

FINAL LAP!

Sunday 8 May 2022 22:07 , Marc Mayo

It’s looking good for Verstappen...

Sunday 8 May 2022 22:05 , Marc Mayo

Verstappen has put 1.5 seconds between himself and Leclerc, with Sainz holding third by 1.3 seconds too.

Vettel retires as Schumacher pits, that will be looked at by the stewards and might be a grid penalty for the Haas man. Albon in the Williams is running in the points as a result.

And Russell once more has fifth, after a legal DRS move on Hamilton.

Sunday 8 May 2022 22:03 , Marc Mayo

Russell lets Hamilton back into fifth following that overtake having left the track earlier.

And there is something going on in the midfield (off camera, might I add) as a yellow flag pops up on the monitor before a big jumble of places is exchanged. Schumacher properly whacked Vettel!

“That’s clearly my corner,” says the youngster. Don’t think it was. His first F1 points finish is over.

Sunday 8 May 2022 22:01 , Marc Mayo

Five laps to go and Leclerc is driving like a man possessed as he hunts down Verstappen, in search of a race win that looked well out of reach not long ago.

Of course, he spun off when pushing too hard in the last race..!

Sunday 8 May 2022 21:59 , Marc Mayo

Two massive scraps at the front courtesy of that safety car - and Perez tries it on Sainz!

NO! The Red Bull went in too deep and only momentarily held third as the Ferrari just drops back and rolls by to keep position.

Sunday 8 May 2022 21:58 , Marc Mayo

Lap 51/57: Russell nabs fifth from Hamilton after a really decent scrap going into the hairpin, although he went off the track before re-entering and squeezing by... A suspicious one, that.

Bottas now has Alonso, Schumacher, Ocon and Vettel for company in the battle for points.

Sunday 8 May 2022 21:56 , Marc Mayo

BOTTAS GOES WIDE! That’s Hamilton and Russell into fifth and sixth!

And Leclerc is still within a shot of Verstappen...

Sunday 8 May 2022 21:55 , Marc Mayo

DRS enabled and both our battles at viable for the under-a-second gap required to enact the rear wing flap which adds a little boost down the main straights.

Behind them, Bottas is holding fifth with Hamilton and Russell scrapping for seventh - will the younger Brit make a move on his teammate?!

Sunday 8 May 2022 21:53 , Marc Mayo

Lap 47/57: Leclerc is right on Verstappen’s tail, just half a second between them! Can he launch a late assault or is he using up all his tyres waiting for DRS to come online next lap?

When it does, Perez will really fancy his chances on Sainz...

Safety car restart!

Sunday 8 May 2022 21:51 , Marc Mayo

Verstappen slows the pack right down and flies off the final hairpin, with Perez right on Sainz.

The Ferrari pulls out very wide to cover the inside line and holds position!

Sunday 8 May 2022 21:48 , Marc Mayo

It sounds like Gasly was on team radio as he hit Norris: “The car won’t turn, oops...”

He’s running last and pits to retire.

Meanwhile, the lapped cars are allowed to un-lap themselves and get away from the frontrunners as the safety car prepares to come in this lap.

Sunday 8 May 2022 21:46 , Marc Mayo

Christian Horner refuses to rule out Red Bull telling Verstappen to move aside for Perez, should he get past the Ferrari pair on his new tyres.

It would still be a big surprise, mind...

F1 correspondent Matt Majendie

Sunday 8 May 2022 21:44 , Marc Mayo

So, we might just have a race here. Safety car should pull in soon enough. I don’t believe Charles Leclerc has the pace to get past Max Verstappen when things restart.

If anything, Sergio Perez might be able to scythe past both Leclerc and Carlos Sainz with the straight-line speed of the Red Bull.

Sunday 8 May 2022 21:42 , Marc Mayo

Right then, the top-ten as the safety car prepares to come in:

Verstappen, Leclerc, Sainz, Perez (on fresh Mediums), Bottas, Hamilton (who didn’t pit in the end), Russell (on fresh Mediums), Alonso (who has a five-second penalty), Schumacher and Ocon (on fresh Softs).

Sunday 8 May 2022 21:40 , Marc Mayo

Lap 42/57: Soft tyres for Ocon as the Alpine finally pits, while the crane carries around the stricken McLaren.

Ricciardo also bolts on the Softs back in 15th.

Alonso gets a five-second penalty for hitting Gasly in the incident that really triggered all this.

Safety car!

Sunday 8 May 2022 21:39 , Marc Mayo

Gasly, after that tangle with Alonso, had run wide and rejoined the track just ahead of Norris, who went for the overtake but clipped the rear-left of the McLaren!

Russell pits for the Mediums with Perez and Hamilton also coming in.

Norris crashes out!

Sunday 8 May 2022 21:37 , Marc Mayo

A BIG shunt although he thankfully avoids the barrier.

That’s a virtual safety car!

Sunday 8 May 2022 21:35 , Marc Mayo

Lap 40/57: Verstappen’s lead over Leclerc is stubbornly sitting at around the 7.5-second mark, as he loses the fastest lap mark to his title rival.

In the fight for ninth, Gasly and Alonso tangle which appears to have knocked a piece off the AlphaTauri as he loses the place and falls to 11th.

“He closed the door at the last minute,” the two-time champion claims although he did very much did down the inside on that one.

Sunday 8 May 2022 21:32 , Marc Mayo

Russell tells team radio that they may as well hold on for a possible safety car or virtual safety car, he has a 12-second lead over Bottas and would come out seventh if he pits now.

Sunday 8 May 2022 21:30 , Marc Mayo

Rain on the radar!

“A little bit of rain about eight minutes away,” Vettel is told over team radio after running wide at Turn 17 and letting Norris through for 14th. Maybe that’s not quite enough to shake up this race, with 20 laps to go...

F1 correspondent Matt Majendie

Sunday 8 May 2022 21:28 , Marc Mayo

As Max Verstappen records the fastest lap, he looks incredibly comfortable for the win. But how his Hard tyres behave from now and the remaining 20-plus laps is the big question.

That, and the prospect of anyone hitting the wall and bringing out the safety car.

(Getty Images)

Sunday 8 May 2022 21:27 , Marc Mayo

Lap 35/57: All while the midfield is falling over each other and frontrunners are stretched out way in front, Russell is sat fifth having not yet stopped but hoping for a very decent haul from what looked like a poor weekend.

When he pits, Bottas will take fifth and Hamilton sixth - could this turn into a nice little grand prix for Mercedes?

Ocon, also yet to pit, sits eighth ahead of Gasly and Alonso to round off the points.

Sunday 8 May 2022 21:22 , Marc Mayo

The biggest battle right now is not even for points, with Stroll in 12th and yet to pit on old Hard tyres leading a DRS train that includes both Haas cars, Vettel and Norris.

Ricciardo pits from ninth to pop out right at the back of it and even behind Albon, in 17th. Not a great day for McLaren.

Sunday 8 May 2022 21:20 , Marc Mayo

Lap 30/57: Here are the timings after the halfway mark:

Verstappen sticks in a fastest lap and leads Leclerc by 7.8 seconds, who has 11.2 seconds on Sainz in third. Perez follows through in fourth after a further 4.9 seconds. Russell, yet to pit, runs fifth.

Red Bull boss Horner tells Sky that Perez had a sensor issue for that scare earlier on, which is now fixed.

Sunday 8 May 2022 21:17 , Marc Mayo

In the battle for third, Sainz and Perez both pit with 5.4 seconds taken by Ferrari to strap his Hards on but Perez is through in 3.1 to close the gap.

Issues putting the front-right on for the Spaniard, the wheel which has taken the biggest beating around this anti-clockwise track in the Miami heat.

Sunday 8 May 2022 21:15 , Marc Mayo

Here comes Verstappen!

It’s a set of Hards bolted on in just 2.4 seconds to keep him comfortably in front, he re-enters the circuit as Leclerc crosses the finish line.

Leclerc pits!

Sunday 8 May 2022 21:12 , Marc Mayo

“The car is so difficult to drive,” the Monegasque says over team radio.

And thus he pits, with a 3.2-second stop not bad as he straps on the Hards and comes out well clear of fifth-placed Bottas.

Sunday 8 May 2022 21:10 , Marc Mayo

A fastest lap from Leclerc who is pushing those Mediums deep like all of the four frontrunners, the Red Bull and Ferrari pit walls perhaps a bit nervous that these Hard tyres are taking a while to warm up.

Verstappen remains well out in front, 4.5 seconds to be exact.

Sunday 8 May 2022 21:09 , Marc Mayo

Lap 23/57: Norris and Magnussen are the latest to slide wide at Turn 17, from 14th and 16th respectively. It’s turned into a real nightmare afternoon for the McLaren.

Here comes Hamilton into the pits, running sixth. That’s a clean stop and he comes out in clean air, now seventh.

Problems for Perez!

Sunday 8 May 2022 21:05 , Marc Mayo

“I’m losing power!” Perez tells Red Bull team radio. “Engine’s gone, man!”

No such concerns from his engineers, who tell him it’s just the tow to Sainz that he’s lost. More Red Bull reliability issues incoming?

“Fail five-zero, power unit’s looking good now,” comes the fix. “I think it’s back,” the Mexican replies. He lost about six seconds on Sainz in that.

Sunday 8 May 2022 21:03 , Marc Mayo

Norris pits from seventh and a slow 3.6-second stop earns a bit of a smirk from David Beckham, watching on from the edge of the garage.

Vettel and Magnussen are right on the Brit and those Hard tyres take a while to warm up, allowing both past him! That’s 15th for Norris...

F1 correspondent Matt Majendie

Sunday 8 May 2022 21:01 , Marc Mayo

There’s been so much fanfare about the inaugural Miami Grand Prix but the worry is that a third of the way through this race, it’s currently in danger of being something of a procession to the chequered flag.

Max Verstappen looking incredibly at ease in the race lead and pulling steadily clearer from Charles Leclerc - his lead is now 3.4 seconds.

Sunday 8 May 2022 21:00 , Marc Mayo

Alonso suffers a long 5.7-second pit stop in his fight with Gasly for seventh, and comes out with Stroll on his tail in a battle for 13th!

Behind them, Vettel and Latifi are enjoying a big scrap and the German makes it stick down the inside to go 14th.

With those stops, Russell is moving nicely up the pack and looks good for a one-stop while sat eighth, in between the two McLarens who are yet to pit. Then it’s Ocon in 10th, another who started on the Hards.

Sunday 8 May 2022 20:56 , Marc Mayo

Lap 15/57: Don’t go anywhere just yet... Fading tyres and plenty of overtakes around this place means a safety car or VSC are really not out of the question.

Plan D is the strategy call for Leclerc, he’s 2.8 seconds off Verstappen - and here’s how the Dutchman took the lead:

Sunday 8 May 2022 20:53 , Marc Mayo

Leclerc goes really wide at Turn 17 which costs him a whole second and Ferrari may pull him in off those struggling Medium tyres sooner rather than later.

Red Bull tell Verstappen he’s doing an “excellent job” looking after his front-right.

Magnussen and Tsunoda are the first to pit from the midfield.

Sunday 8 May 2022 20:51 , Marc Mayo

Lap 11/57: Leclerc has dropped to 1.5 seconds off Verstappen, a bigger gap than exists between the championship leader and Sainz in third.

Ferrari team radio tells the Spaniard they are extending this first stint as long as they can, in the hope of forcing Red Bull into a strategy decision.

F1 correspondent Matt Majendie

Sunday 8 May 2022 20:47 , Marc Mayo

The whispers are that Red Bull think they'll win the battle of the tyres here in Miami. An early radio message to Max Verstappen from his team suggest Charles Leclerc's Pirellis are struggling, and moments later he passes him.

Hopefully that's not the death knell for this race in terms of competitiveness for the win.

Verstappen leads!

Sunday 8 May 2022 20:47 , Marc Mayo

Verstappen is within DRS range of Leclerc and Red Bull tell the Dutchman that the Ferrari’s right-front tyre is wearing.

Leclerc did struggle with keeping his tyres in check while leading the Imola sprint a fortnight ago.

And he’s powerless to keep the lead this time as well! Verstappen gets the job done on DRS at the start/finish straight.

Sunday 8 May 2022 20:44 , Marc Mayo

Zhou is OUT! Alfa Romeo team radio tells him to stop - “I can’t believe it” says the rookie.

Sunday 8 May 2022 20:42 , Marc Mayo

Lap 5/57: Hamilton is convinced he has damage but team radio informs him that there are no such signs on the data.

He chases down Gasly with ease and up ahead is Bottas building a bit of a gap to protect his fifth place - the Red Bulls and Ferraris are already way up the road.

On the Hard tyres, Russell is having a much worse time of it in a bit of a swapover since Imola... He’s 14th.

Sunday 8 May 2022 20:38 , Marc Mayo

Hamilton breezes past Alonso to re-take seventh place, a sign that overtaking may well prove possible today.

Replays show that, after his lock-up, he did indeed get tagged by the Spaniard shortly after the start which helped Alonso past him.

F1 correspondent Matt Majendie

Sunday 8 May 2022 20:37 , Marc Mayo

It's not the main story obviously but what a start from Fernando Alonso to climb up four places from the start to seventh, including passing his former teammate Lewis Hamilton.

Hamilton suggests there may have been some foul play by the Spaniard. I'd fully expected carnage at the start but it didn't transpire. There's still time...

Sunday 8 May 2022 20:36 , Marc Mayo

Lap 2/57: Alonso is the big winner off the line and runs seventh after four overtakes, with Ricciardo and Schumacher taking three to knock on the door of the points.

That does include Stroll and Vettel starting from the pit lane, of course.

Leclerc has just over a second on Verstappen at the front.

There's a great unknown to how the inaugural Miami Grand Prix will play out. It's clearly a straight fight between Ferrari and Red Bull but it's unclear to know who has the best race pace.

Ferrari lacked the straight-line speed of Red Bull but are clearly quicker cornering. Max Verstappen will want to get past at least one Ferrari at the start.

Miami Grand Prix managing partner Tom Garfinkel has admitted that the circuit will make changes to the oft-criticsed chicane, while explaining the reason for the slowest part of the track being implemented.

He told Motorsport: “We’re changing whatever we need to, to make the track better. I think the challenge with the chicane and that I don’t know that we communicated well enough why it exists and where it exists.

“It was a bit of a necessary evil, if you will, to get the track big enough to create the rest of the race track to be great. That’s an area where it’s a tricky part, because we have to really slow people down because we didn’t have enough run off space.”

All eyes on Turn 1

Sunday 8 May 2022 18:55 , Marc Mayo

Carlos Sainz has voiced his concern that the lack of grip off the racing line will lead to particular errors at the start of the race.

“At the start it could be very tricky on that inside line and that outside line of Turn 1,” Sainz said yesterday.

“We’ve asked the FIA to make sure that the track is as clean as possible for that start because we could see mistakes coming from drivers that really have no blame for it.

“Because it’s basically like driving on a dry line and out of the line feels like it’s wet – so we need a bit of help there from the race direction to help us.”

Fernando Alonso said: “It is not F1 standards. I think this weekend we need to put the show, but this has to change for next year.”

Lando Norris went further, stating: “The fact is just offline it's really, really terrible.”

It’s raining in Miami!

Not much, mind you, at the moment but a little drizzle has just hit the track which will wash away a bit of grip from the rubbered-in surface after a dry weekend to this point.

Temperatures are a toasty 31ºC with only a 15 per cent chance of rain before the sprinkle, so anything that lands should evaporate fairly quickly. Winds are also fairly low around the city today.
