Fabio Silva caught out by Celtic fans as hidden Rangers sign off backfires before telling social media move

Forward Fabio Silva looks to have been caught out by Celtic fans as he appeared to sign off his Rangers career - as an unseen clip of him greeting the Hoops' support was caught by punters at Hampden.

The arrival of the Portugal U21 international from Wolves in January caught the eye - but the 21-year-old failed to match the billing as he made little impact on the Light Blues search for silverware in the second half of the campaign. Silva netted just six goals during his six-month loan spell as Rangers fell away in the Premiership title battle with Celtic - before Brendan Rodgers' side saw off their rivals on Saturday to claim the Scottish Cup.

And it was after the 1-0 defeat to the Hoops at Hampden that Celtic fans appeared to catch out Silva. The attacker was preparing to trek the steps at the national stadium to collect his runners-up medal after Adam Idah's late strike decided the Old Firm final - with Parkhead supporters in the stands ironically cheering the Rangers players and waving at the disappointed stars.

While his teammates kept their heads down to quickly collect the consolation prize, Silva was snapped waving at the punters and smiling. Before waving once more midway up the Hampden steps, he appears to realise that it is the Hoops' fans that are attempting to wind him up.

One Celtic fan on X said: "Love the way Fabio Silva waves back to the fans as if he didn't realise what they were doing." Another stuck the boot into Silva branding him a "clown" after falling for the taunt.

Silva may have been hoping to wave farewell to the Rangers fans with a permanent deal appearing unlikely. Extending his stay from the English Premier League next season always appeared unlikely - given Wolves forked out a whopping £35million to sign him from Porto - but the forward appears to have all-but confirmed he won't be back on Instagram. Following the full-time whistle, eagle-eyed fans have spotted that Silva quickly changed his profile picture from one wearing a Rangers kit.
