Imagine a world where Facebook and Instagram crash at the exact same time. It may sound like a horror movie, but it was real life on Thursday (May 25).

Around 8.40pm UK time/3.40pm ET on Thursday, the sound of people in all corners of the globe yelling at their computers and mobile devices could be heard. Thank goodness Twitter was still up so they could rant:

The service outage occurred at a rather inconvenient time for Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg, who was a bit busy accepting an honorary doctorate alongside Star Wars' James Earl Jones at his old stomping grounds of Harvard University.

It should have been a huge moment for Mark. After all, he'd quit the very same university 12 years ago to devote himself fully to establishing Facebook as the ultimate social network.

(Maybe if he'd actually graduated, there wouldn't be this many service outages? Just sayin'...)

(Are you taunting us, Zuckerberg?!)

Although service has resumed for most, Digital Spy has reached out to Facebook for clarification on what caused the outage and when access would be restored for all users.

Naturally, confused and disappointed Facebook and Instagram users were looking for someone to blame for this utterly baffling turn of events. This guy below has as good a suggestion as any:
