The nostalgia for the 90s seems to be inescapable. The music, the fashion and for some the comfort of going back to a time where people felt more free and connected was certainly re-created for a moment at the recent Faithless gig at Document in St Jude's.

The images of the screen of the 90s ravers were mirrored by some of the crowd, but it was certainly no wild rave. But everyone seemed to be having a good time, united by good vibes, with some people telling me that the night brought them back to their clubbing days.

While they opened with some of their well-known tracks like Insomnia, there were a surprising number of covers used throughout. As much as I love ‘Crazy’ by Gnarls Barkley, it wasn’t a good fit and felt too slow of a track to be performed by a House music band.

The crowd seemed to slightly lose its enthusiasm and that moment but soon perked up when the band performed ‘We Come 1.’ They used the occasion to play homage to the late Maxi Jazz and had his image projected on the screens throughout the track. It was a beautiful moment which completely captivated the crowd.

At this point I thought that the night was just beginning but suddenly it was all over and the band ended at 10pm with a performance of Dido’s ‘Thank You’.

We were unable to access the venue from Penywell Road so ended up arriving late after walking up and down the street before being directed to the entrance on a nearby side street.

Despite being told the gig would finish at 10.30pm by 10pm the music had stopped. But there was an acceptance from the crowd with one person telling me that the venue probably needs everyone out of the building by 10.30pm.

If Document was in a rush to get people out of the building, the decision to funnel everyone out of one set of fire doors did not encourage a swift and smooth exit. The polite crowd were patient despite the circumstances and by the time we had queued up to get out of the large warehouse and then queued in the cold for our coats, it was almost 11pm.

Despite the music stopping at 10pm, it took us almost an hour to vacate the venue.

The outdoor portaloos, large no frills courtyard and warehouse venue can create the illusion of being at a rave or a festival. But it still would have been nice to use a toilet which had a working light and lock.

While it was an enjoyable experience, the set was just too short for me. The band performed well and it was a nice evening out but it all felt a bit anticlimactic at the end.
