A woman who posed as a fake doctor to con elderly people out of money has been jailed for three years.

Kammi Bassi, from Coventry, pretended to be other medical professionals, including a nurse, a physiotherapist and an occupational therapist.

She gave drugs that had been prescribed to her to three people, putting them at risk of internal bleeding.

One woman took seven tablets before consulting others who advised against them, the court heard.

During her trial at Warwick Crown Court, Bassi, 58, tried to deceive the jury by appearing in the dock in a wheelchair, wearing dark glasses, a hearing aid and holding a walking stick.

But Judge Sarah Buckingham said: “The court has seen her medical records, and I am satisfied that at the moment she has not been diagnosed with any condition which would cause sight or hearing impediment.”

She feigned blindness in her first appearance at court but had been seen getting out of the car she had driven to the trial.

There was no evidence of any psychiatric symptoms to explain her bizarre behaviour, other than “an almost insatiable need for attention and love”.

Sentencing Bassi in her absence Ms Buckingham said prescribing drugs "when you are not qualified can be extremely dangerous".

"Your conduct was motivated not so much by money, although you were determined to be paid, but out of a deep-seated desire to be respected for skills you simply didn't have.

"But you did demonstrate a reckless disregard for their safety."

She was also given a restraining order banning her from having any contact with her victims or their families, and a criminal behaviour order.
