An infestation of spiders has forced the closure of two London primary schools.

Pupils at Thomas Buxton School and Osmani School in Tower Hamlets were sent home after false black widow spiders were found on the premises.

A false black widow spider bite can cause a painful and sometimes severe swelling but is generally not thought to be life threatening.

Both schools will be closed until Monday while the council works to remove the spiders and nests, according to The Evening Standard.

In a statement, Tower Hamlets Council said: “Pest control teams are currently on the premises of both schools, dealing with the infestation of false widow spiders. The spiders are not considered to be dangerous but do bite.

“Due to health concerns for staff and pupils the schools will be closed until next week. Please check the two schools’ websites for more information.“

The spokesman continued: “If you are worried about the health of your child – in particular around spider bites – please do make sure that you refer your child to a local GP.”

False black widow spiders are not usually aggressive towards humans and being bitten by one is rare.

However, there has been a reported increase in the species throughout the UK due to changes in climate.
