Family affair as Josh opens barbers next to sister's salon

A new barbershop has opened in Chesterton, and the sisters of the owner run the hair salon next door. Josh Shaw, 26, has set up his own barber shop, Shaw’s Barbershop, after 10 years in the trade.

Josh started barbering straight from school and trained at the Cauldon site of Stoke-on-Trent College after finishing high school. His first job was at Scott’s Barbers in Butt Lane, which is also the street he lives on, and has been passionate about the expertise ever since.

The London Road barbers is situated next door to Salon 22, which is owned by sister Ellie Shaw and business partner Hazel Stockton, making it an idyllic location for Josh’s shop. He opened his barber shop on Monday January 13, offering half-price hair cuts on the day, and he says business has been good so far.

Josh said: “I have over 10 years experience in all aspects of barbering including hair and beards. I got into barbering as I had a passion for doing hair when I was at school, which was Clough Hall High School.

“I’ve worked in many shops in Stoke [and Newcastle], but started off at Scott’s Barbers. I’ve decided to set up on my own as I’ve always wanted my own barbershop. Also, my sister Ellie Shaw owns the hair salon next door - Salon 22. She and her business partner Hazel Stockton opened in 2022 and they are still going strong, so it’s nice to be next door to them.

“The first customers were all happy. I’m taking on new customers, and we do skin fades, cuts, beard trims, hot towel shaves, and I cover all age groups too. The shop is opposite Churchfields Primary School, and I’ve got offers on all week because of just starting up.”

Shaw’s Barbershop is open Monday to Saturday, from 9am until 6pm. Walk-ins and appointments are both welcome. Prices for services at the barbershop range between £3 to £7, and professional hair wax and other products can be bought in-store too.
