Family Films Fire Evacuation Through Smoldering Bushland in New South Wales

Madeleine Kelly and her family were forced to evacuate their holiday home in Rosedale, New South Wales, to take shelter on a nearby beach as a fire approached the area while the family was vacationing on New Year’s Eve.

The video shows thick smoke blanketing the sky as the family drives away from the scene. A separate video shows the family taking shelter at the beach.

An emergency warning had been issued by the New South Wales Rural Fire Service, urging residents to “leave towards the beach and shelter" during the catastrophic December 31 blazes.

By January 1, scores of homes were confirmed as destroyed along the New South Wales South Coast. Among them were 15 residences destroyed in Rosedale and 40 at nearby Malua Bay, where hundreds more people had to shelter on a beach overnight. Credit: Madeleine Kelly via Storyful
