Family fun lined up at The National Coal Mining Museum over half-term holidays
Families are always keen to plan a fun day out over the half-term holidays and The National Coal Mining Museum has lots lined up.
Running until Sunday, November 3 there’s fun for all the family lined up over the autumn half-term school holidays. Families can visit the Wakefield attraction for free crafts, storytelling, nature trails, tours plus much more.
Families with older children can try some terrific textile crafts, making a terrifyingly good cat or go on a tour to find out what makes our mine water pumpkin orange. There’s a chance to take part in a lantern making workshop, creating magnificent illuminating creations which might well be used in the museum’s annual Light Up Festival.

Half-term is the perfect time to travel deep down underground on the museum's iconic underground tour which allows visitors to travel 140m underground on a unique experience that allows them to experience industry and technology through the decades. Lynn Dunning, chief executive officer of the National Coal Mining Museum for England, said: “The museum is a great place for families to visit all year round. There is so much on offer for a low cost and exciting family day out. Our underground experience is not to be missed and there are so many creative activities to do during the October half-term.”
The aforementioned Light Up Festival will be running between Friday, November 22 and Sunday, November 24. During the festive season, families can take their little ones 140m underground to Father Christmas’ grotto as part of the Santa Underground festivities. The grotto will be welcoming visitors from Saturday, November 23 until Sunday, December 22.
