New family-run restaurant to give people something 'they've never seen before'

A new family-run restaurant is opening on the Royal Albert Dock next week. The Delhi House Cafe hopes to introduce a true taste of modern Indian dining with authentic Delhi flavours to the city.

Launching on Tuesday, September 17, Delhi House will be open every day for lunch and dinner. The menu focuses on Indian delicacies with the venue seating 120 guests. The restaurant will operate in the 3,1000 sq ft space on Albert Dock previously occupied by Lerpwl, which shut down in 2023.

Owners Varendra Lamba and his wife Rajinder, along with their son Sherry and daughter-in-law Preen, relocated from Delhi to Manchester in 2020. That same year, the family banded together and launched the Delhi House Cafe in the Corn Exchange.

Preen handles all aspects of Delhi House as the manager and head of marketing, while Varendra is head of expansion, interiors and development. Rajinder, who creates all of the venue's recipes, is head of the kitchen. Sherry is chef patron and head of operations.

Preen said: “Myself and my family are from Delhi, the food capital of India and we want to transport our diners to this exciting, bustling and experiential city, delivering the most wonderful experience of modern Indian dining that they haven’t seen before. Meanwhile, we’ll also be sharing the knowledge and expertise that goes into creating authentic Indian food.

“When we opened in Manchester almost five years ago, we couldn't have imagined how well Delhi House Cafe would be received. In September 2023, we set our sights on expanding to the beautiful city of Liverpool which is the perfect next location for us because of its culture and the friendly nature of people here.

“We really believe that there is a gap in the market for Indian food in Liverpool and the dishes that we’ll offer at Delhi House. Our goal is to transport our guests so that they feel as though they're dining in a restaurant in Delhi.

"We want to change the common preconception that Indian food is for hangovers, that it’s curries from a takeaway courier, or that it's just unhealthy. True authentic Indian cuisine is so much more than that.”

The Delhi House Cafe will be open Sunday to Thursday, 12pm - 9:30pm, and Friday and Saturday between 12pm - 10pm.
