A beer is often a welcome reward for runners at the end of a race. But a new half marathon is going several steps further — by giving entrants half a pint of craft beer every two miles.

The Craft Half, organised by the Street Child charity, will take place on Wimbledon Common next month. Runners who do not want to do the full 13.1 miles can also opt for a less intense 10K option.

Those who make it round can celebrate at a Half-ter Party with live music, street food — and more beer. Runners are asked to raise a minimum of £150, which will be matched pound for pound by the Government through UK Aid. The cash will go to the charity’s Right to Learn Appeal, backing projects in Sierra Leone, Liberia and Nigeria that help some of the world’s most vulnerable children go to school.

Organisers have hired a team of medics and security staff to ensure the safety and wellbeing of runners.

The Craft Half follows Street Child’s Sierra Leone Marathon, in which runners travel to the country to learn about charitable projects before taking on a marathon in 30C heat and 90 per cent humidity.

Lucy James, challenge coordinator for Street Child said: “The Craft Half is pure Street Child — exciting, slightly different and guaranteed to make a huge impact. We’ve created an impressive legacy through our Sierra Leone Marathon, now its time to get people involved a little closer to home.”

The Craft Half takes place on February 4. Entry is £25. Enter at street-child.co.uk/craft-half
