Fan's Analysis of Helio Castroneves' Auto Racing Career

Born on May 10, 1975 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Helio Castroneves is a Brazilian IndyCar driver. The 36-year-old began his IndyCar Series career in 2001 and he currently races for the Penske Racing team. Castroneves is regarded by many IndyCar experts as one of the best and he frequently finishes as one of the top 10 drivers in the IndyCar Series.

The famed Brazilian auto racer has been very successful at the Indianapolis 500 race track. In fact, the 2001 Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year has won the prestigious race three times. His three wins have been in 2001, 2002 and 2009.

Castroneves' 2009 win at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was record-breaking. Though Dan Wheldon of England, who has won the historic race before, had a good chance at winning the race, Castroneves won and his victory marked the first time in the history of the Indianapolis 500 that a person who was born outside of the United States won the race three times.

Along with establishing that record, Castrovenes has set many records during his talented IndyCar Racing career. Castrovenes has finished in the top-ten in more races than any other driver with 93 top-ten finishes, he has won the most poles with 30, and he became the most successful Brazilian driver in terms of career victories when he won at the Barber Motorsports Park in 2010. Interestingly, his former manager previously held the record of most career victories.

Since Castrovenes is arguably the best Brazilian auto racer of all time, he has received international fame. Moreover, the IndyCar Series driver has also competed well against drivers in the IZOD IndyCar World Championships. For example, Castrovenes was able to finish as the ninth best driver this year on October 16; Tony Kanaan was the winner of the championship series.

Despite not winning the Indianapolis 500 since 2009, Castrovenes has the potential and talent to win another Indianapolis 500 race, as he has become one of the greatest drivers in IndyCar Racing. An IZOD IndyCar World Championships win is also within reach for the 36-year-old Brazilian driver.

Tom Harrington has been a dedicated follower of IndyCar Racing for several years. Harrington's all-time favorite IndyCar drivers are Helio Castroneves, Roberto Moreno and Marco Andretti.
