Poor Shirley Carter is currently facing a bleak future on EastEnders after she was jailed in a dramatic twist last night, having taken the blame for her son Mick.

But as she sat in the cell – starting her three-month sentence – there was one thing that everybody was talking about: it's Bad Girls all over again!

Prior to taking on the role as fiery Shirley, Linda Henry starred in ITV's Bad Girls as equally fiery prisoner Yvonne Atkins.

And as she returns to prison on-screen, everyone seems to be making the same jokes.

But it's not just fans having fun with this – there was even a knowing reference in EastEnders itself as Billy and Honey had a rather amusing conversation about Shirley's past.

"She'll be alright, Shirley. She's a tough old bird," Billy said to his wife Honey, after learning of her prison fate.

"But seriously Billy, I would have thought she would have been inside before," a baffled Honey replied.

Interestingly, Liz Lake – who wrote the second part of last night's double-whammy, has previously worked on Bad Girls, so it's no surprise that a few subtle references were thrown in.

EastEnders continues on Tuesday, March 14 at 7.30pm on BBC One.
