The Island with Bear Grylls has seriously upset viewers.

During Monday's (May 1) episode, those tuning in were disgusted after watching Jane Gates 'bully' cameraman Phil Coates by trying to turn the other contestants against him before eventually getting him booted off the show.

Some found the tense scenes so "uncomfortable" to watch that they have decided to boycott the Channel 4 series all together, not only for allowing such behaviour but for then choosing to air it on national TV.

Taking to Twitter, one viewer wrote: "I love @TheIsland & have watched every series. I don't think I can watch again after tonight. Bullying unacceptable #TheIsland."

Another then posted: "Put me off watching #TheIsland what a bunch of nasty people full of double standards @BearGrylls."

Moments later, a different fan commented: "@TheIsland seriously not watching this crap anymore. Cannot believe this has been aired. Poor Phil's family watching #humiliating #TheIsland."

A fourth agreed, adding: "Not sure I'll be watching the rest of this series, no interest in seeing how bullies and bystanders survive in the wild #TheIsland."

Shortly afterwards, another posted: "#TheIsland has been deleted from my Sky+ as not watching now. Shame on you @channel4 producers for allowing that disgusting behaviour!"

Jane appeared to turn on Phil after he stripped naked before taking a dip in the ocean in front of some of the younger female contestants.

She then got further irritated when he decided to use some cooking oil to keep a fire going, when the group had agreed it should be consumed as they desperately needed to up their calorie intake.

The final straw for Jane came when she asked to sit by the fire at night to warm up as her arthritis had been troubling her. But Phil refused, insisting it was important for him to be there instead to make sure it was kept alight until morning.

Furious with Phil the following day, she approached each of the other contestants one by one, telling them she was arranging a vote to get him booted off the island – despite the fact that this isn't part of the show.

After the vote, Phil was forced to leave – a decision some of the contestants were really unhappy with.
