Fans of K-pop sensation BTS think new single Butter is a low-key lesbian anthem

K-pop idols BTS have returned with a brand new single titled “Butter”, and fans are celebrating the song as a lesbian anthem.

The new song is the second English-language single from the South Korean band after last year’s hit “Dynamite”. The two songs share similar upbeat vibes and, of course, BTS‘ signature stellar choreography.

In the “Butter” music video, the seven members of BTS – Jungkook, V, Jimin, Jin, RM, Suga and J-Hope – dance in suits as well as gym clothes. At some points in the video, the seven members appear in front of a colourful backdrop that looks shockingly like the lesbian Pride flag.

Keen-eyed queer ARMY members – the fandom name for BTS – were moved by the possibility that the K-pop group might have intentionally put a lesbian flag in their music video. Queer fan group LGBTS safe space tweeted that they believed the group put the flag in the music video, saying they were going to “f*****g sob”.

Someone else pointed out the gradient in the lighting is ‘spot on’ with the varying colours and tones in the lesbian flag.

BTS will perform “Butter” live for the first time on Sunday (23 May) at the 2021 Billboard Music Awards, where they’re up for four awards.

They are also expected to make a special cameo appearance in the upcoming Friends reunion, which is set to premiere on HBO on 27 May. NME reported BTS will join Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Malala Yousafzai and David Beckham as special guests on Friends: The Reunion.
