Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman could be written as bisexual, if a fan petition to Warner Bros is successful.

The female superhero was revealed to be attracted to more than one gender in an issue of the DC comic in 2016, leaving fans hoping she would be portrayed as such in this year's record-breaking movie.

Directed by Patty Jenkins – who just signed a record-breaking deal of her own to direct the sequel – the first movie didn't consciously address Wonder Woman's sexuality, besides her short-lived romance with Steve Trevor (Chris Pine).

There was a brief exchange between the duo in which Diana hinted she had sexual encounters on the all-female Themyscira, by saying "men are essential for procreation, but when it comes to pleasure... unnecessary".

Whatever Diana was hinting at in that conversation, it wasn't enough for fans, who want Wonder Woman to be established as "canonically bisexual" in the next movie and have launched a Change.org petition asking Warner Bros to get the job done.

Started by NYU's GLAAD representative Gianna Collier-Pitts, the petition points out that bisexual people are underrepresented in popular culture, and the DCEU superhero would be an ideal choice to break new ground in Hollywood.

"Some of you may be thinking that this specificity doesn't make a difference but for people like me who rarely see themselves reflected in media, believe me. It does," Gianna writes.

"We are oversexualized and underrepresented. We are called greedy, dishonest, and confused. We are the least likely to come out and the most likely to suffer from depression and anxiety, on top of experiencing higher rates of sexual/intimate partner violence. We are made to feel invisible and in doing so we begin to see ourselves as invisible.

"Making Wonder Woman canonically bisexual on the big screen would make her the first openly LGBTQ superhero of any gender from either DC or Marvel's cinematic universes, and would solidify her place as a true role model for women of all ages and identities."

And Gal Gadot, who plays Wonder Woman in the DC universe, is all for it.

"When you talk theoretically about all the women on Themyscira and how many years she was there, then [it] makes sense," Gal told Variety, when asked if the movie version of Wonder Woman is bi.

"She's a woman who loves people for who they are. She can be bisexual. She loves people for their hearts."
